Everything about this product from the hardware to the packaging looks good. I wanted to make this guy my scanner, but the truth is, it's actually for archiving books. With traditional scanning, the process of clearing the table, unfolding the paper, flattening it slightly, flipping it, putting it away, stacking the next one, etc. is a bit more tedious than running the paper through a traditional scanner and you're done. For me it's a conversation piece on my desk, but it also serves as a chic table lamp. I will use it to scan documents from time to time when I don't feel like going to my traditional scanner. I have an important piece of advice. The first documents I tested were some of the included Czur manuals. The pages have a sheen, so they were glossy/shiny. The harsh light on the image didn't show the text, so this was my first reaction. Wow, that's awful. Why would I do that and then spend hours troubleshooting when I can just use a regular scanner? Then I realized that the included side lights should have a purpose. Even in the stock photos there are no side lights so this was a surprise. But it turns out they are very important for documents and manuscripts with emphasis. For this type of document you should use side lighting, your scans will be perfect and glare free. When scanning, you have to choose one or the other, both lights do not light up at the same time. The side light is pretty neat, it connects via a magnetic connector and has its own on/off touch button. Finally, it comes with a foot pedal and a black desktop stand to place documents on. The Peddler is primarily designed to scan books while standing. Your hands can continue turning the pages while your foot kicks back. You must use the black pad with the scanner. His material presumably helps the scanner to calibrate. I don't see anything special in it. It doesn't hide flimsy electronics or anything like that. It seems that this is a regular work or desktop tablet that you can buy anywhere. I have one of those giant black gaming pads on my desk that takes up the entire desk. There were no problems scanning documents with this tablet. I think any black pad will do, but I keep a Czur pad underneath this pad. That way it doesn't get dirty or spoiled and I can always move it from the top if the scanner requires it.
