My cat knew this pet mat was for her and was excited to try it the moment I opened the box. Since she's already quite old and frail and doesn't hop on furniture anymore, I tried putting her in a flat rectangular box on the floor instead of the couch (with the idea of making a simple "bed" to roll up). Although I obviously couldn't ask her (I'm still working on teaching cats to talk), she seemed to like it immediately. I later decided to "upgrade" to a cozier, fully enclosed "cat den". which I made from a large box that happened to be near me. I cut a cat sized entrance on one side, tucked the rug in and voila! More privacy, less drafts (my house is a bit chilly) and I suspect better heat dissipation. Note: While I can't promise that a box like this (aka a cat den) will make your home more inviting (okay, it might even make it less attractive), it will likely make your cat as happy as mine. (What cat doesn't like a box?) I'll probably be looking for an electrically heated mat soon just to give my cat more options and see what she likes best, but still I'm very happy with my purchase. this thermal pet bed/mat. Very simple concept, easy to clean/maintain (outer layer is removable and washable) and it will only be a nuisance if you copy my cat cave idea. ;)
