The hex head that came with the anode was 27mm not 1 1/16". It fit a bit loose and managed to detach the existing anode, no damage. I don't know what would happen if the existing anode was really hard to remove with a 27mm socket. I've had an electric kettle for a little less than 13 years. When I tried to remove the old anode most of the anode material was still intact - wow. It only rose 1-2 inches before the encrusted metal caught on the edge of the hole. Instead of wasting time breaking off almost four feet of the bar, I just screwed the old bar back in place. I will just keep the new rod and try again in 2-3 years.
