Review on Sony UBP X700 Blu Ray Player Vision by Will Ridpath

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Lives up to its reputation and spec ratings

I do a lot of research on devices before I buy them, especially at this price point. So I read and looked at many reviews before deciding to buy. I had an old Sony Blu-Ray player that worked fine, but it didn't upscale my standard DVDs very well and wouldn't give me the best result on my new 4K TV. I looked at all the popular UHD/4K players and the UBP-X700 is one of the cheapest. Its characteristics compare favorably with even more expensive devices. There are two HDMI outputs, one is for video only and the other can carry both audio and video (for older non-4K AV receivers). There's also a coaxial audio output, but I don't find it useful. I'm using the HDMI video output and routing optical audio from the TV to the soundbar. Technical reviews show the player produces excellent 5.1 audio, but I only use the soundbar so I can't rate this feature. DVDs, even the oldest, look great, and HD, Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray look crisp and bright. Of course, there's a full set of built-in streaming capabilities, but I use Roku for this purpose. . If you plan to use the player as a streaming device, it loads very quickly and is very good at playing 4K YouTube videos. There is a USB port on the front for playing your own content. There is no digital display on the front like some pricier players, but since the device is behind my soundbar and the functions are displayed on the TV screen, I don't see that as a disadvantage. The remote control is small but quite intuitive; There are many customizable options in the settings menu. Since there are very few differences between this X700 and the X800, I don't think the latter is worth the extra $50 or so. A NOTICE. This particular seller included two high quality, high speed HDMI cables, which I appreciated.
