This is a reliable machine. The things my wife and I make require both fairly thick, strong materials and thin, delicate materials, and we get beautiful seams no matter what material we use; from thick and rigid vinyl, silky satin to stretchy lycra. That's not to say that walking doesn't help. I can't wait to try the leather; there is a thicker needle and that's it. It's not a super fancy machine with a million functions (buy a computerized one if you want), but it gives me far more accurate stitches than I expected, especially for the price. Tip: read the instructions. No seriously, READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL! Singer was kind enough to include a manual full of details, setup instructions, and tips on how to sew properly. I printed it out, bound it, and that was it: not on diskette and not via a PDF link, but in the book itself in the box with the machine. Shocking right? I was personally amazed, especially after thinking of all the people who gave this machine bad reviews for the simple reason that they didn't know how to use it properly, or worse, didn't know how to sew. Yes, the only downside to the manual is that you really need to read it to get any useful information. don't just look at the pictures. *** I don't mean to be mean but I assume the people who gave this device a bad review are also complaining that their phone is broken because they don't know how to install a new app . *** Each machine works and feels slightly different. This is a very easy machine to operate and use. It doesn't really require any skill to use properly, and as far as I can tell there's nothing exceptional about this machine. If you're working with thick materials and want to get a strong stitch without straining the motor or damaging the needle every time you take it out, this machine is for you. Seriously read the instructions.
