ScanSnap iX100 Wi-Fi enabled portable scanner

A few years ago I got myself a desktop -ScanSnap got S1500 to work with and was impressed with its speed and versatility. You no longer have to go to a large workgroup's copier/scanner/printer to capture documents. You no longer have to be constrained by the "black and white only" limitation on our team's devices that made capturing color images difficult. I was so impressed with the software and the device itself that I bought its younger brother ScanSnap S1100 for home use. After three years of heavy use, I found that it had a dead pixel. While this would be a minor disadvantage when scanning text documents, it was a major problem when scanning images. Since the cost of repairing an out-of-warranty unit is likely to exceed $100, I decided to replace it with the latest version of the s1100, the iX100. This device is a functional analogue of its older brother, but with additional Wi-Fi capabilities. The smartphone app allows you to scan straight to your phone. If you have a working Wi-Fi network at home, your smartphone and scanner can communicate through the router. When you're away from home, the scanner can switch roles and act as a WiFi source that your smartphone connects to directly. Additionally, your desktop or laptop computers at home can connect to the scanner via USB, or you can set up a Wi-Fi connection to your home computers through your home router, even though only one of your home computers is paired to use the Wi-Fi can be -Fi connection in one place. Time. You must use the ScanSnap Wireless Setup Tool to select a different home computer to connect to the scanner wirelessly. You can use the USB interface on any of your computers without having to reconfigure settings. A drawback is that WLAN can only be used between the scanner and a home computer at the same time. I also thought this was a problem, but after thinking about it, I realized that this is a necessary caveat. Note the following: If you have more than one PC wirelessly connected to the scanner, how do multiple instances of ScanSnap Manager software know which PC they really want to scan a document to? Unlike its older brother, the iX100 doesn't pull through the feeder, but the device makes it easier to work with multi-page documents. Just insert the first page and press the blue button. The page is scanned and the machine waits while you insert the next page (or the back of the first page). As soon as it detects paper in the feeder, it will be scanned. When you've scanned the last page, simply press the blue button again to tell the system you're done scanning. The scanned document is processed according to the settings you selected. While it doesn't do full duplex like its big brother, it's fairly easy (Snap?) to simply turn the page to scan the second side. The device scans with four different resolutions of your choice: : 150 dpi, B/W: 300 dpi) Best (Colour/Gray: 200D/D, B/W: 400D/D) Best (Colour/Gray: 300 DPI, B/ W: 600 DPI) And at a slower speed (Ideal for high-quality color capture, etc.) Excellent: (Color/Gray: 600 DPI, B/W: 1200 DPI) When you use it, ScanSnap Manager gives you multiple options what to do with your scan is to do. You can scan to PDF, email, print, JPG, OCRd PDF, Power Point, Excel, Word, Sharepoint, card or receipt reminder and multiple cloud destinations. You can customize each setting to specify file location, resolution, etc. You can even create custom items to scan documents into the specific application of your choice. If you scan multiple JPG files, each scan becomes a separate file. Saved files have names with a long timestamp (YYYYMMDDHHMMSS), or you can specify your own default filename prefix (by letting the program add a serial number after your filename). When you scan into any of the Office editors (Word, PowerPoint, etc.), the document retains its original fonts and formatting! The Card Minder application automatically collects metadata from a business card, which can then be exported to your contact list. Although not included, both soft and hard cases are available for the scanner. If you are going to be traveling with it, I would recommend buying this case as well. The iX100 is powered by an internal lithium-ion battery that is charged via a single USB connection. Don't worry about a separate power adapter to carry around. It's small enough that I can leave it on all the time and just throw it behind my computer when I'm not using it, or place it in front of my keyboard for scanning. All in all a very impressive machine!

Pros
  • One touch scan with ScanSnap Cloud - automatically share and send documents, receipts, business cards or photos to pre-defined cloud services
Cons
  • A definitely bad product
