Although it is said to be a cardioid, the polar pattern is so great that it picks up the sound directly behind the microphone just as well as from the front. The windshield was used to create a rear baffle that delimited the pattern.

This is a replacement microphone for an existing system. They seem to work well and have a good pickup. If I installed the system from scratch I might consider using a different microphone. In general, the microphone is good for the money.
