Very sweet story with a good message

Bought for a young mum who loves to knit. I first read it to my kids and they all loved the story because it's funny, thought provoking, sweet and has a great message that there are things that are more valuable than money. When you're done reading, you might want to do some knitting. The story flowed quickly from page to page, captivating the audience without getting too long. It was right. I love it.

Arrived broken, history leaves something to be desired

Not very happy with it. It's hard to tell from the photo, but the book arrived crumpled and the cover was visibly soiled front and back. I was happy to get this book for my kids because we love Sam & Dave Dig a Hole and the reviews for this book were great. I like the idea that the kid criticizing Annabelle's sweater is just jealous (and needs her own sweater/happiness), but otherwise the plot just didn't feel right to me.

He had so much potential but he's sending the wrong signal.

I really wanted to like this book because it has so much potential. But 2 things really bothered me. The main characters' teacher told her that her bright sweater distracted her classmates and they couldn't concentrate. This directly teaches the girls that it is their fault that their clothing distracts others from their studies and that it is their fault. I firmly believe in the lack of a dress code. Another incident that disturbed me was when the Archduke got angry and cursed a little girl…

A well-told tale of friendship, social skills and school life

This contemporary fable conveys the moral that happiness - or whatever colors and textures make life worth living - never runs out when you are with it shares reject, but feels devastated when he is stolen or hoarded for himself. The book also celebrates a child's ability to change their world for the better. Despite the obvious lessons, Extra Yarn avoids tedium and didactics by simply telling readers a story rather than telling them what wisdom to extract. And illustrate the entire text…

Funny book! Great Christmas gift for mum

My mum is an avid knitter and loves to crochet. had always been. I think it's her own time, time for herself that she can still do for others. She loves to be busy and her hands are mostly occupied on the knitters' autopilot when she sits down to watch TV. Anyway, I bought this book and some skeins and sent it to her in a big box for Christmas. I even crossed out the names in the book and replaced them with the names of family members and pets. It was a HUGE hit and she loved it. Best gift ever

A subtle analogy of unconditional love?

I love this book! I found one in the library while collecting books to work with underprivileged kids downtown. In this book, a girl finds a box of yarn. She discovers that the yarn is enough to cover and protect not only herself but everyone around her. No matter how much it shares, it never dries up. That will never be taken from her. I love using this book to teach children that when God's unconditional love is given to someone, there is always enough. The more we share it, the more we…

slip knitting is good for growing up and facts of life

If you are a knitter you should get this book. I first saw it at a local yarn store. It's about a little girl who, in the middle of winter, finds a box full of yarns of all colors and knits a sweater. When she finished she had some yarn left over so she knitted a sweater for her dog Mars. Annabelle ends up knitting sweaters for almost everyone in town, except for Mr. Crabtree, who just doesn't wear sweaters. Instead he got a hat. Word of Annabelle and her extra yarn spread, and the cocky…

Yarn as a metaphor for luck.

This book is truly a masterpiece. My daughters love it and so do I, but probably for different reasons. They love the sweet, funny story of a girl who knits sweaters for everyone in her small town and ends up defeating an evil archduke with a long mustache. Good stuff. I also love this book because it has so many levels; it's easy for adults to appreciate yarn as a metaphor for luck. Klassen's powerful illustrations show us the dark, snowy landscape at the beginning of the book. Annabelle then…
