Cisco Console Goodness

I am using this with a Raspberry Pi and it connects 4 switches at the same time. The only problem is that one of the 8 connectors was giving problems so I just used a different console cable.

Pros
  • looks good
Cons
  • concise guide

Very bad instructions

The CD that came with the device had a huge selection of operating systems and it contained my coveted Windows 7. But by following the instructions closely I couldn't get the FTDI driver to work. The email response from the manufacturer and the YouTube video link narrated by the Scot looked good, but it was for Windows 10 and it didn't solve my problem either. So I spent $40 on something that after a few days of effort doesn't work at all.

Pros
  • Perfect for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Vulgarity

Finally a serial cable that works!

I think you get what you pay for, it was more than similar items found at auctions for less money. The big difference is that this one works!. As radio amateurs, we all mourned the loss of the once ubiquitous serial port. While there are a lot of cheap Chinese cables out there, they used cloned chips that may or may not work with drivers and software. I plugged it in, installed the drivers, and assigned 16, 17, 18, and 19 serial ports. I'm using a navigator interface that uses a few ports…

Using physical com ports instead of virtual com ports

Bought this for use with PowerSDR and WSJT-X rather than messing around with virtual serial port programs as both programs run on the same computer and also bought a null modem adapter (female to female) and connected the two cables together. A very simple solution, although a little overkill, leaves two additional RS-232 ports for antenna/rotor control in the future, and is probably slightly cheaper than some of the 'virtual' serial port options that do the same.

Money Well Spent!: Computer Accessories & Peripherals

I used a couple of separate USB to serial converters in my hobby shack and bought two more devices that needed serial ports. I came across this article and decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. It was very easy to install on my Win 7 Pro 32-bit system and the product works very well even in a strong RF environment. Each serial port in the Octopus cable is labeled (A, B, C, D) and the windows are assigned Com8, Com9, Com10, Com11 respectively. These assignments persist across reboots…

Pros
  • Great Price
Cons
  • Boring Packaging

Works great with Linux

Plugged it in and the Linux kernel recognized it with no problems. Ports work as expected. I wrote udev rules that are triggered by the cable serial number so that there are predictable /dev symlinks for these four ports no matter what other USB serial devices are connected. Kudos to Gearmo and SerialStuff for a detailed and accurate product description that actually mentions Linux and the specific FTDI chipset used. The rx/tx LEDs seem fine - it would be even better if there were rx/tx LEDs…

Makes things a lot easier

I have a home lab I built for my network research and needed a way to access every switch/router without having to plug and unplug the console cable every time changes (which is really annoying if you know what I'm talking about). I had a choice between buying an Access server, which would cost me a lot more, or buying this item. I have to say this did the job perfectly, I can control 4 different devices with one connection and I don't have to constantly get out of my seat. If you have a home…

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Negligible maintainability

Technical information

Excellent product. I let other reviews convince me of the general build quality. The main purpose of this review is to provide technical technical information about the device that can be useful if you intend to use it for industrial applications. Microcircuits to get the necessary RS-232 voltages. There is an additional EEPROM FT4232H, AT93C46D (with unusual markings). All datasheets for the above are readily available online. There is software from FTDI that allows you to flash the EEPROM or…

  • Very fast delivery

This is AWESOME for network engineers!

In short, the GearMo 4-Port Serial Adapter is AWESOME! I'm a professional network engineer and I often need to connect to the serial console ports on routers, switches, firewalls, etc. The RS232 serial connection is pretty much the industry standard for connecting a local console to these devices. Since I often work on multiple devices at the same time and often try to make coordinated changes across 2 or 4 devices that need to be done with relatively precise timing, this product seemed like a…

Windows 8 Hams: This is your USB to RS-232 Serial Adapter

This cable is essential for Windows 8 users who need RS-232 serial ports for legacy hardware interfaces. All in all I find this adapter a solid addition to my Windows 8 system where I have several RS-232 serial devices that I use regularly. HAM info: I'm using this cable to convert a USB 3.0 port on my late 2013 iMac (OS X 10.9.x Mavericks, Windows 8.1 Professional, 64-bit) to 4 serial RS-232 ports I mean hooked up a ham radio transceiver. Automatic tuner and Kenwood TH-F6A programming cable. I
