The quality just isn't there. The sliced melon is so heavy that the Velcro doesn't hold it together well, the kiwi slices have two Velcro straps so they can't stick together, and most pieces have had the paint chipped off after just a few weeks of use. I really expected better quality and longer lifespan.

This set is very cute and fun and not at all suitable for casual play. Paint is peeling off most parts and some have cracks and dents from being dropped or bumped into each other. The Velcro fasteners have come loose and the parts wobble apart when they are glued together. It was fun, but I won't buy it again.

We love Melissa and Doug and our almost 2 year old has happily added this fruit set to his growing collection. The Velcro is strong enough to hold the pieces together without falling apart themselves (even the heaviest pieces) but loose enough to easily "cut" small children. We also love that the Velcro is soft enough not to scratch or irritate our little one's skin while holding the pieces.

We have a few Melissa and Doug wood fire sets (sandwich, veg, sushi) but this is the best quality. While the others are not painted on the inside, the fruit base is painted to look like real fruit inside and out. My 19 month old loves to cut and pick fruit with velcro and is starting to get really good with a wooden knife. We glued the cardboard backing to the inside of the box. I know it's just part of the attractiveness of the packaging, but the box is much prettier with a back.

My son started seeing these weird youtube videos of someone 'cutting' wood fruit so I bought this set. The first night he went nuts and played with him for 20-30 minutes which was a very good sign. He loves this set but the paint was peeling off the edges within a week and now (about a month later) the fruit is dented and still peeling around the edges and part of the velcro is completely fuzzy so the Parts will not stick together. PURCHASED 2 SETS and having both problems. I received a second set thinking ours was just one of the flaws but both sets were thin and the cantaloupe and kiwi were defective - the velcro didn't fit or was set too low so the fruit barely held together. Unfortunately, they are poorly made, as they give the children a lot of fun working with them. In one set, the bowler hat was not held together by a piece at all. So even if I send it back and get the same set I have the same problem :(

Long time Melissa and Doug fan. As a teacher, I understand very well what works and what doesn't. Not this product. The details are definitely solid and well done. But it's all debatable if the toy feature doesn't work well. And it's velcro that holds the pieces together. At the same time, I bought a much cheaper brand for cutting food. My nephew loves this set. We bought it for Christmas and it hasn't stopped playing with it almost 2 weeks later. He is 3 years old so 2 weeks of enjoyment from a toy is rare. I got a set of woody vegetables for my firstborn from another brand (I didn't keep the box so I don't know which one) and she played with it every day.
