Description of πŸ”¬ Measuring Mohs Hardness Kit Specimens

Kit contains nine mineral samples, each with a distinct hardness, and a specimen key. Can be used in the field, in the laboratory, or for personal use to determine the hardness of an unidentified sample. Fantastic classroom tool for hands-on demonstration of mineral hardness. Samples contained include talc, gypsum, calcite, fluorite, apatite, feldspar, quartz, topaz, and corundum. Samples are numbered and stored in a sturdy, sectioned container for easy access and safe keeping.

Somewhat useful

The bricks # 6 and #9 were marked with the same symbol. No point below #9 as shown in the description. Someday I'll find out what's what. Stone #4 was 1/4" by 1/8", barely big enough to take the label (definitely not the 1" in the description). As noted, the description does not mention that stone # 1 contains asbestos In my case, stone #1 was in a small torn plastic bag.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • No instructions

Great for finding the mineral in your hand

I like the hardness numbers on the samples with a corresponding table what the sample is. There was relatively little corundum, but it's the hardest, so not much of it is needed. I'd recommend putting a durometer number on it to keep a few sticky dot markers from getting tangled. A great gift for a climber interested in specimen identification. I have used it several times to determine the hardness of samples.

Pros
  • It's ok!
Cons
  • Dear

#9 is tiny and got lost in the package. #1 - Asbestos.

Definitely not for children because of the risk of asbestos. The Mohs scale has 10 digits. No.10 diamond material is not included, which is normal. I thought #9 would be missing because it's such a tiny piece of stone. I finally found it and canceled my return. #1 is a bag of asbestos talc. I hope no one wraps this as a gift to a school or children without reading the attachments as the online description makes no mention of asbestos. Selling without prior notice to the buyer should be illegal.

Pros
  • Impressive
Cons
  • Boring packaging
