I was trying to fix a 10 gauge wire that was cut by a backhoe. I tried using butt connectors from the local hardware store but they didn't cut it. I made sure I had a good crimping tool as mentioned in other comments. I used dialytic lube before crimping. Just because I had some. For the heat shrink tubing, I just used butane grill starter. And it worked great! I was a little apprehensive about using an open flame for heat shrink tubing, but it was listed as an option in the instructions. These kits work very well. The metal crimp is heavy to make a connection, but the crimp is easy to crimp. Shrink tubing is great. They are thick, have good shrinkage, and at the end of the heat sealing process, once tightened, the sticky sealant releases from the inside of the tube, forming an excellent watertight seal.
