Setup is difficult for those unfamiliar with external monitors

Having just received the BenQ 3205u's display, I can say that the setup is not for the faint of heart. The included quick start guide was not sufficient to get a working display with my 14" MacBook Pro M1 with USB-C to USB-C connection. This is my first time using an external display; I'm using mostly unfamiliar with the many ports available on an external monitor. My first try showed that the MacBook recognized the BenQ as a connected device. I could see it on the display panel. When I went to the Settings/Display panel and found the BenQ selected, the MacBook's display went blank and the BenQ's display said "cable not connected". So I was left with a blacked out MacBook screen and a non-working BenQ display. There's no way to control anything. When I did the BenQ turned off, the MacBook came to life and only showed the screen.I contacted BenQ support and they quickly replied that I turned the display off and on again and also checked all the connections, which I have already done. Turning off the power didn't do anything. They told me that the display doesn't automatically detect the signal, so you have to manually switch between the three available inputs using the five-way controller. It worked and showed the Mac screen on the screen. Nothing in the Quick Start Guide prompts you to select the required BenQ input step. I easily found a complete guide online, someone essential to understand this ad. Once I had a working display, I found that the text was too small for my vision. Adjusting the screen resolution gave me a reasonable text size at the cost of less than full screen. I need to better understand the resolution setting. I did a quick edit in Lightroom and am very happy with the display and color compared to the MacBook. I understand that BenQ has a lot of extra ports, but at the moment I don't understand what "upstream" and "downstream" are when describing a port. I want to connect to my Epson P600 printer using a USB-B monitor-to-printer cable. Can I make it? In summary, I think customers unfamiliar with external monitors will have trouble getting this to work. Need better guidance. The included base is also pretty sharp. I cut myself trying to position the screen to insert cables that were in an awkward spot. The base has sharp edges, enough that I didn't realize the cut until blood appeared in the beginner's guide. However, I hope this affordable monitor will meet all my photo editing needs.

Pros
  • Better than other more expensive monitors!
Cons
  • Was in love with this monitor until it let me down. The support team only plays games. Lemon.
