I was very picky about the binoculars I bought myself and when I chose binoculars for a 9 year old boy I won't even look at them the plastic models sold for children. However, this model caught my attention, and for a kid it really is a better choice than any cheap "adult" binoculars. It is very light, so the child can walk with it around the neck without passing it to adults. It has a detachable neck strap that cannot accidentally strangle a child. The picture is bright enough and the power is high enough to meet the requirements, but not so high that it's difficult to keep a steady picture. It's presumably splash-proof and somewhat drop-proof. I thought a 9 year old might find it too childish but he was very happy with the way he looked. And it amused him that he could look backwards through those binoculars and his hands seemed small and far away.
