Serious modifications are required for proper installation and operation.

So once installed, this grip looks good, but it doesn't fit as well as the original. The spring clip slots had to be drilled out to fit the new cylinder. The metal knot literally fell off where the plastic was welded. I had to drill holes and drive screws to hold it together. As a result, the mechanism hit the supports in the tailgate and did not allow the handle to work. I had to bend and adjust the metal to clean it.

Pros
  • Hands-free operation
Cons
  • Not bad, but...

Doesn't fit right

So I bought this for my son who was away from school and needed a replacement grip that broke on his truck. Installed today and sent photos. While it works correctly with the tailgate, it doesn't quite fit and is noticeably off-center. As it's not OEM I didn't expect it to be a perfect replacement but I did expect it to fit. I have to wait until he comes home in May to take care of it. If you're looking for a replacement, make sure whatever you buy fits properly.

Pros
  • Slim design
Cons
  • Has issues

Good for the money, albeit weak.

Excellent price and very easy installation. Just pay attention to how the original comes off and it will be very easy to install. My only complaint is its durability. The grip feels weak, especially on the right side of the grip. Every time I open the tailgate I feel like the handle will break and sometimes it gets a little stuck. Definitely not Toyota quality but a worthy replacement I'd say. I haven't tried other brands so I'm only comparing to original equipment.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • There are some nuances

The lock worked perfectly

My back door lock broke at night after a winter rain and the temperature dropped from 40° to 3°. Not by itself, but when I tried to open the tailgate. So I ripped out the old one, packed up the car for a sub-zero weekend, and returned to have my new latch waiting for me on the stairs. Installation was easy (would be faster if it weren't for 7 degrees and snow) and the fit looks the same. I loved being able to take my lock off the original latch and put it straight into the new latch.

Doesn't quite fit, but works.

Just right. You can fit it fully into the opening, or you can use two 10-bolts, but not both. It's too far off spec for both. The left stud mount is almost in the right position. The right bolt mount is almost high enough. The assembly corresponds almost to the shape of the plate. The seal almost fits. The handle is almost big enough not to rattle. Nearly. But not really. In the end the handle from this one fit into an OEM build and it fits and works. It's almost right. Nearly.

Pros
  • Nice
Cons
  • Big and bulky

Keep the retaining clip from the original lock cylinder!

Tailgate handle seems solid enough. Installation was easy. One caveat: the lock cylinder bracket does not hold the lock cylinder in place. When the key is inserted from the outside, the lock cylinder falls into the abyss. (This is a good example of why you should make sure the new parts work properly before pulling everything back on.) In any case, the retaining clip is easy to remove from the original mechanism and reattach to the new mechanism and then the lock cylinder. works as it should…

Perfect fit for 2006 Tundra 4dr

The product came fully assembled and ready to install. I had to remove the access panel from the inside of the tailgate of my 2006 Tundra to fit the latch mechanism from the outside. The hole pattern corresponded perfectly to the original. Used a T-30 sprocket to remove the access cover and a 10mm two-bolt socket (the product did not come with new mounting bolts - I used the old ones). Take the time to grease the latches on the sides of the tailgate. while the access bar is disabled. The handle

Nice and efficient replacement.

This hasn't happened to my Tundra for a long time, but so far it seems like a good and effective replacement. I've taken note of what others have said and am trying to use the product closer to the right side of the handle. It's definitely way better than the grip on my truck. The handle was stuck and difficult to open. Considering the price of this pen and the mostly good reviews, I decided to give this one a try. No problem, as always, but then again; I've only had him for a few weeks. The…
