So, you want to buy a wheelchair online?

Well, many folks with disabilities do exactly that. We are all different and each of us gets our wheelchairs for different reasons. Some wheelers like me ( spina bifida ) need wheelchairs because they can't walk or stand or whatever. Others with conditions that have no impact on their lower legs can just use them as mobility scooters . Whatever your situation might be, first thing first - check the local medical equipment stores in your city. They often carry quite a large selection of wheelchairs at good prices. However, there are some limitations to buying locally: 1) Even if you have medicaid , they may require you to spend up to $100 on the chair before they even start covering it ( medicaid is a federal US program which provides free medical insurance to people with low income - more information about medicaid can be found here ) 2) If they decide your wheelchair isn't necessary, they may not cover this purchase at all 3) It will take them weeks or even months to approve the chair.  4) You have to go through the pain of finding a store in your area that carries decent selection of wheelchairs 5) And most importantly - if you are looking for specific model of wheelchair, it may simply not be there.

With all these reasons in mind, some people decide to buy their wheelchairs online. And here's where things get messy. Let's start with the company that landed on my radar today - Rowheels ( ). The flag ship product offered by Rowheels is "Lightest Wheelchair in the World" which they claim it weights only 8 pounds!  Pretty impressive claim - but I wanted to test it myself so I ordered one for $399 (plus shipping of $59). After all, you get what you pay for right?
