Terrible long-term reliability

They break down quickly. I bought two of these. The first one failed after 3 months of brief use. The second finished work and then sat for several years. The next time it was used, it failed because of just a few cables. It looks like the receiver unit failed a second time (always shows wire 1 is bad). A complete waste of money now that there are many cheaper options on the market. Don't waste your money on it. I'm currently trying out a model from Elegiant that can also track cables, at halfโ€ฆ

NO NETWORK TRAFFIC PASSING THROUGH!

This seems like a good tester, but it has a serious flaw. It doesn't allow Ethernet traffic, so your devices won't fully boot. What's the use of checking a device's power consumption if you can't turn the device on fully? I want to see how much power is being used during boot up as well as during actual usage. Unfortunately, this is not possible with this measuring device. I have a tester from PoE Texas that works but has a scrollable display that only shows one attribute at a time. So if theโ€ฆ

Pros
  • MANUAL SCAN: The manual scan is good for testing loopback cables.

Does it work for computers and accessories

This device is good for static testing Ethernet cables. This is the second one I've bought after an idiot hooked up my first device's receiver to a live POE circuit and blew it up. This device can only be used with dead (disconnected) cables and works fine for that. Testing newly attached Ethernet cables is a frustrating necessity because things can go wrong when connecting RJ-45 connectors. Reversed pairs can occur in close proximity to the connector. Worse, the "thru" connectors I've triedโ€ฆ

Cons
  • Legacy

For simplicity - works, just doesn't test the SHEILD conductor. xBaseT tester as well as xBase 2. It's not a complex device - it's a 9 volt battery and a series of LEDs to indicate conductivity through the different conductors of the cable, plus a little logic to automatically sequence through the conductors to go so you can test the two far ends of the same wire by one person. Connect one end of the cable to the tester's remote port, the other end of the cable to the remote port, turn on theโ€ฆ

Better tools available

There is a price-performance problem with this device and the associated TC-TP1 sensor. I bought this with TC-TP1 for work. I have a cheap VicTsing toner/tester at home and it suits what I do better than this setup. ADVANTAGES: The transmitter can test a cable connected to itself or to the other end of a remote terminator. - Better built than VicTsing. Definitely better - I can stop at one cable to troubleshoot, or I'll keep testing all 8, one at a time. VicTsing cannot stop on a line. Comesโ€ฆ

Absolutely competent in everything.

So far I have found nothing wrong with this particular tester. I'm going to play around with a tricky question, but it's almost a universal little thing to choose from, so that's fine. Incidentally, this test should be viewed in conjunction with my review of the TrendNet TC-TP1 Tone Probe, as the two tools are closely related. and make up the bulk of my network installation test/verification equipment. The tester comes well packaged with basic documentation. The basic battery compartment, likeโ€ฆ
