Do not use the supplied plastic rod clamp!

Mechanically good grip. The plastic bar holder included in the kit should be replaced. It is strange that as a "supplement" they show good videos made by the same company Dorman. I tried the door handle 4 times and then reassembled the door. That went 2 more times, then the rod came out. I had to do everything again. waste of time! Update: Broke within a month!

Pros
  • Inspires confidence
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model

Fixes a common bug

I rate this as not the easiest install but it's not the seller's fault. This is GM. I have a 2004 Astro and this is the second time I've had to change the grip. Remember that you will need to drill out the rivet the first time you change it. The hardest part is accessing the door and seeing what you're doing. Before you dismantle the door, make sure your window is up.

Pros
  • Sturdy design
Cons
  • Not the best

Ideal replacement for that difficult to install part

This is the ideal replacement for a GM part that is prone to failure (cast metal has a limited lifespan). Far from easy installation, but that's a GM design issue, not a parts issue. I cut another hole in the door as seen on youtube to access the nut that doesn't have an access point and left all the bars connected. You may be wondering why this review should have the word "Stretch" when the metal doesn't stretch?

Pros
  • Great Value
Cons
  • Legacy Model

Better than the original body and finish

They appear to be of slightly better quality than the originals. Installing them is a huge pain, but it's GM's fault. One trick I found on YouTube is to drill a hole in the door just above the latch to access the fasteners without removing the entire interior panel. While the metal rod holder on this one is better than the original design, I used the plastic holder from the broken original as it was easier to snap into the ridiculously cramped space.

Pros
  • Perfect for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Quick start guide

This is the perfect replacement. It's the best there is.

This is the perfect replacement Best part, it fits and has a great finish, but it's the same weak metal as the original pin and if it hangs at all it will break as part of the OEM hinge. It was a defective part when GM installed them at the factory. I have replaced 3 driver's door handles on my Safari and 2 on a previous Astro in 6 years. There are millions of GM minivans on the road, and if any of them made an all-metal handle like this as a replacement, they'd be instant millionaires!

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Definitely bad product

Appears to be well built.

This item appears to be well made. It is much heavier than the stock doorknob. However, the facility sucks. It's not that supplier's fault, it's GM's fault, who couldn't have made it much harder. Unless you have the hands of a three year old, getting the top nut back is almost impossible. There are a number of bars that run near where this grip is mounted. So you have to be careful not to cut the handle with any of them. Installing it on the door wasn't too difficult, but it took almost an hour

Pros
  • brings joy
Cons
  • disappears

Great door handle but hard work to replace

I do a lot of auto repairs and consider myself a very experienced home mechanic. However, it was one of the most difficult repairs I've done in years. There's just no place to put your hands in and the door lock bar REALLY gets in the way and hurts. But it's not the doorknob's fault. Once I managed to install it, it works just as well as the original and looks well made. A little bit of useful info: you'll need a 10mm open-end wrench (no compromise here with an adjustable wrench) and a flathead

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • Unusable features

Works great, smooth, feels good.

This is the third door handle I have installed on my van. The OEM broke when someone tried to break into the van and the replacement was a cheap (non-OEM) part that always felt flimsy and "scratched" (ie mechanism) and just didn't inspire confidence. After a few years, the replacement handle literally broke off in the hinge area, so I started looking for another replacement (ooh!). I saw this Depo part at Revain and the reviews were good and a good price too so I bought it. I installed it…

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • Nothing here

Better than Dorman® at half the price!

Even with my store's supplier discount, this Depo external grip was cheaper than the original grip, so I gave it a try. WOW! 100% metal except for the linkage mount, and even that's pretty tough nylon rather than brittle plastic. Installation is the same on all, requiring the removal of two locknuts and a connecting cable (to the operator) hence five stars for that and all others for that matter. I have driven the Astro/Safari #9 for many years so removing the door panel is not a big deal and…

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
