Canson Artist Watercolor Side Wire Review

Just arrived yesterday and already painted my first watercolor in it. The paper seems to be of really good quality. The little book is great because sometimes I like to draw while watching TV in bed. It's a lot easier than it looks. I used the wash on paper first and it's a little crooked in the middle, but as it dries it flattens out without curling.

This sketchbook was so discounted that although I originally wanted to avoid the spiral in my watercolor projects I bought it anyway. I'm not disappointed. I'm not a watercolor professional, everything I do is based on what I see or find out. The paper can withstand ink work without running on the other side. This is my watercolor book and I take it with me everywhere. There are some warps and creases from heavy washing, but I've found that doesn't happen with my watercolor brushes.

I've kept trying to love this paper but it just lets the colors pop easily. I have sooooo many brands of watercolor paper from student to professional. It is by far the most difficult to edit in my drawing style. However, the lifting problem is the most serious. Even after leaving the painting overnight to finish it the next day. I bought this to paint landscapes outdoors because my watercolor notebook was too big and unwieldy. I've seen a lot of watercolor magazines on YouTube and wanted to try it, but I didn't want to spend $20-30 for a magazine from Michaels (art store). I thought I would like this watercolor paper but honestly no. It curves and takes on a "U" shape at the first thin stream of water, which my tape has a hard time holding. It beads up after the 2nd or 3rd wash (even with an intermediate blow dryer) and my paint lays on it horribly, the absorbency is uneven and it soaks up water quickly (in the middle of the wash everything was dry on one side and needs to be moistened again, that will rub the paper). This is a great watercolor sketchbook! I'd really like to find something between the standard 5.5 x 8.5 and 9 x 12, which seems normal for watercolors. 7x10 would suit me. However, this book exceeded all expectations! I ordered it at the same time as another of the same size and was initially surprised that this one was larger. I found that Canson measures these pages at the perforation line. If you were to rip them out, the size listed (5.5 x 8.5) would be what they would be once removed…
