Best College Pottery Book

This book helped me learn a lot about what each type of mineral does in a kiln. I also learned a bit about the history of clay, but most of what was in the book was practical.

Great art book for crafting

I received this book as a textbook for a college pottery class, but it is much more than a normal textbook. Not only does it contain information on different ceramic styles and techniques, but also beautiful color illustrations of pottery from different times, places and artistic traditions. This is the same reference work as the text.

Pros
  • Pleasant to use
Cons
  • Some maintenance

first and good solution

The Craft and Art of Clay by Susan Peterson, Ian Peterson is the first book I bought online. I got it from the university library (I'm a sophomore at Southern Cross) and when I had to renew my loan I thought this book was worth buying. Now it's even better that I have it. The simple approach to this art, which I've never done before, makes this book a refreshingly easy read. It can be used to find details and for general viewing, for interest. As a ceramics newbie, I wanted a book that wouldn't

Former teacher - excellent books!

Susan Peterson was my associate professor of ceramics when I was a student at Hunter College in New York many years ago. My little clay brick in books! We learned clay/glaze chemistry and more. For those who want one of the best books on clay, here it is. Her husband was also a ceramics engineer (if I remember correctly) so her information and experience was paramount. She also knew a lot about historical ceramics. For those doing work that required a thorough understanding of the properties of

For Serious Potter's Library (Beginner to Intermediate)

I received this book as a Christmas present from my boyfriend in 2003 as I had just started casting molds in September. I'm still taking courses and this is the best and most comprehensive guide I've seen. I've bought and reviewed quite a few books but nothing I've seen compares to this one. But I have a word of warning for budding potters; There is absolutely no substitute for studio experience and practice. My instructors rightly told me from the start that the art of making sound takes manyโ€ฆ

Excellent guide to working with clay

This is a great book for anyone wanting to work with clay. The book is clearly written for prospective and current studio potters. The book was originally published in 1992 and is now in its fourth edition. And having mentioned some security issues, there are plenty of tutorials on sculpting clay and the tools to use. There are manual building sections: pinch, serpentine and panel building. Then there is a lot about the technique of "throwing" the clay on the potter's wheel with good photoโ€ฆ
