Purchase a six-foot cable. They're a lot shorter than you think. Returned for a longer one. Only when fully stretched does it reach a length of four feet. Stretching is a lot harder than you think. There was a risk of pulling the pin on the cliff. I have six foot versions on both of my trailers. I consider this a significant change.

6ft fully stretched and it looks like it could even pull out the e-brake pin at 6ft like my rig (see photo). This has been taught and I'm glad I didn't go for the shorter 4 foot length. You can see that my switch and the connection point on my truck's bumper are no more than a few feet apart. Very happy with the look and build quality of the cable. This makes the installation look professional and neat.

Note: 4ft means 4ft including all cable redundancies. I measured the distance from my breakaway switch to the clutch at about 3.5 feet and figured four feet would allow for some extra clearance, but that's not the case. Four feet probably isn't good for attachments more than two feet from the breakaway switch. If the 6ft version is built the same way, it's probably only good for splicing up to 4ft to hold some cable slack for turns.

Like most of you I didn't know what size to buy. I chose almost 4 feet because it made sense to me because I didn't want the cable to drag or hang too low. I finally switched to 6ft at the last second, deciding it was better to make it too long than too short and I could just trim it down if I had to. Our travel trailer has 34" spacing between attachment points (trailer-to-truck switch). I'm glad we went with the 6 inch version over the 4 inch version. "Distance lengthens the spool by 47%. This cable looks a lot tidier than traditional breakaway cables and you don't have to worry about it dragging on the floor. Don't worry about the 4ft version as it is rolled up. The 6 foot version works just as well and only costs a few cents more, but gives you a lot more flexibility and range. My only concern is that the "cable" appears to be made of plastic with no wire or anything inside, so I'm concerned that it might become brittle over time.
