Best Desktop Environment for Linux: Gentoo

It's easy, it handles hardware changes well (I've had to upgrade hard drives with no issues), I like its interface when used in terminal mode better than other distros' - less eye candy! The only thing that annoys me now are all of these new features being added constantly by distributions such as Ubuntu/Debian which make switching over more difficult if you're not familiar enough yet; but there always seems something else out so this problem keeps getting solved eventually anyway. If your…

Pros
  • Everything is available for download including documentation.
  • Has pretty neat support staff compared against Arch Linux or SlackwareLinux..it might be old fashioned too however at least their docs seem comprehensive &
Cons
  • So-so

Open Source Software made easier than ever

It's very easy to compile programs from source code, which gives you full control over your systems configuration and software installation. Also there are no pre-installed applications that might slow down performance of my computer so it does not lagg as much while rendering games/videos in Full HD resolution at 60FPS like other distros do (which slows everything else). I mainly use GNU Compiler Collection tools along with some external libraries such as C++11 standard library via GCC7.2…

Pros
  • Free Software
  • Open Source Community support for any issues or questions.
  • Great package management system + customizable portage tree structure makes finding apps really quick & simple compared than most Linux operating Systems where searching is hard unless already know exact app names beforehand.
  • This saves alot more space plus less hassle trying different
Cons
  • Good but not great

Very complete operating system which just works

I like that it's not too difficult to get up running, but still allows you enough options so all parts of your computer are taken care of from hardware selection down through software packages (like open source). The gentoo wiki makes setup very easy with great step-by-step documents available at almost every level of difficulty. There isn't much "wow factor" in this distro, though if thats what you're looking for go ahead! This is more of a no brainer choice - its solid. If you want good…

Pros
  • Stable/secure build system /package management solution; runs fine over 100mbps internet connection under load easily.
  • Easy way around Linux permissions problem using unix file permissioning models instead
Cons
  • Some difficulties
