Had to return one but so far so good at #2 with Ubuntu

Revain was good for a full refund after the first one broke a few weeks past the return deadline. What is broken is the bios. it became unbootable. I can't even get into the BIOS F2 menu. When I only use Linux distros (clearlinux, ubuntu 20.04.1, nixOS, manjaro) I only had problems with the sound card not working properly. I've had a NUC5 since it was released and my old NUC5's sound card used an analog setup for the front panel headphone jack, but the NUC10 on the latest Linux kernels doesn't…

DOA Desktops: Computers and Tablets

Big disappointment with it; I can't even get into the BIOS. I have other NUCs and everything works great; This one should be an upgrade, but unfortunately this 10th gen i7 doesn't even boot. I now have 64GB of storage, M2 drive and SATA SSD awaiting a refund on this NUC as the refund was not immediate. Update: NUC 10 i7 replacement also failed; I spoke to Intel support and the rep told me that there are serious issues with certain BIOS changes. If he was right (and it sounded like he knew what…

I really like the NUC 10 what performance

fast and quiet just what I need. Building a home lab with a type 1 hypervisor I have an ESXi 6.7 key so I'll probably go that route. I bought a second one to play around with an insecure OS, but I installed Ubuntu 19.10 on it, so far it was up and running in less than an hour. I went this route for ease of use and was not disappointed. 12 threads so it looks like 12 cores at 1.8MHz. 64GB 32X2 Samsung 2666, 1 NVME 1TB Samsung 970 evo+ m.2 are all listed as approved providers so there are no…

  • it's clear even the old

Great little mini PC

This NUC is about a side upgrade of an AMD FX-8370 based system in terms of CPU, but uses a fraction of the power. It's much quieter than a multi-fan mid-tower case and uses only 1.4% of the volume (compared to my old case) of the mid-tower case I had. It's small enough to mount on my monitor base for easy I/O access. If I didn't have to, I would use a VESA mount instead. I loaded it with 64GB of RAM, an M.2 drive, and a large SSD, eliminating the need to constantly use the external drive bay…

Fan keeps blowing even when stopped (updated - fixed!)

Update: I spoke to Intel tech support and they suggested trying the BIOS update again. We went into the BIOS and despite the fact that I had previously updated, it showed the old version. The latest BIOS release notes say the only solution was to fix an error installing the previous BIOS, so I must have stumbled upon that. After another BIOS update, the fans calmed down noticeably. If I put the machine to sleep while the fans are blowing, they quiet down within a minute or two and seem to stay…

Pros
  • Very good price
Cons
  • Piggy bank price

lan nic when installing a windows server, probably to prevent these devices from competing with more expensive server machines. The two workarounds are very hacky. However, everything else usually works great. +1 star back for putting heavy VM loads on this little one and she purrs like she's asleep, barely getting warm. Excellent value for the number of cores.

Pros
  • Certified
Cons
  • Hardly any instructions

Network problem in Linux Mint

When installing Linux Mint 19.3 I encountered a problem, the network was not working. The kernel included in 19.3 does not support wired Ethernet or WiFi. Turns out there is a newer kernel available for download. Revain doesn't allow me to post links in this review, but there is a solution on the Linux Mint forums with instructions on how to easily update the kernel. It had (or seemed to have) the same problem, so having just started with 19.3 I decided not to redo the install again. If it gets

Works well for computers and tablets.

DDR4 2666MHz Laptop Memory (260pin SODIMM, 1.2V) M471A4G43MB1. (total 64GB) 3 Samsung 1080P monitors. Using WIN10 with two loaded multi-screen WIN10 VBOX guests, each with 2 cores and 16GB, works well and leaves a lot of overhead to use the host for day-to-day tasks. My i7-4770K dies trying to do this. The Thunderbolt implementation lacks multi-monitor support. Use USB-3/C docks/hubs for multiple monitor support.

Pros
  • . Acceptable.
Cons
  • . Negative.

2012 MacMini replacement

This offshoot is amazing. I bought it to replace a working Macmini that wasn't running as fast as I needed it to. Fed up with Apple's immoral practices, I decided to go back to building my own system that supports Linux. The equipment is excellent. The I7 processor is very fast, as are all other connected modules. WIFI Bluetooth etc. I have 3 displays that work with no problems. I maxed out the Nuc with 64GB of RAM and was still under $1000 with HDD + RAM. Very good value for money. I will be…

Perfect for what I need

WD SN550 1TB GSkill 8x2GB DDR4 2666 WIndows 10 Home OEM I bought this computer for office work with a 4K monitor. Works perfectly. I didn't notice any fan noise. I found an old 2TB laptop hard drive in my house and used it as a secondary hard drive for a total of 3TB. My advice if you want to build this computer is to have a magnetic school driver handy, the M.2 drive screw is tiny and difficult to insert without it. Also, don't try to connect to the internet during installation, as Windows…
