decent tool with some limitations

Works quite well. In a V8 engine, the peak can come in at an angle. I sanded and filed the tip so the part that touches the plunger is smooth and doesn't damage the top of the plunger. After that it worked perfectly to find the OT.

Pros
  • Impressive
Cons
  • Can't remember

Nice though. on Tools & Equipment

Compression gauge works better in my opinion. I bought this and it works fine. If your safety caps/inlet valves aren't working, just keep an eye on your rockers/lifters. When they're on, just use a compression gauge or have a partner place your thumb over the spark plug hole to feel the compression. (Chevrolet SB/LB)

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Crumpled

Ease of use of tools and equipment

This made finding the OT on my SBC 350 easy. I used this tool after rebuilding the top and was able to calculate engine break-in times accurately. I didn't have any issues with this kink like some of the other reviewers. I was just making sure to rev the engine slowly.

Pros
  • Hands free operation
Cons
  • Some difficulties

Another unnecessary Proform tool

As other reviewers have said, the stop is not secured in the spark plug hole bracket. The stopper is screwed on at the end so it WILL DAMAGE the top of the piston. Unfortunately I bought it long before I needed it, so now I can't return it. Spend the extra money and get a quality tool.

Pros
  • Pretty packaging
Cons
  • Some flaws

Works great with spark plugs and ignition tools

This small number helps to check the OT. It's about the size of a typical spark plug, so it should clean any exhaust manifolds or manifolds. As others have noted, the threads on the (inner) set screw are a bit sloppy, so I put a strip of teflon tape on it to give it a little slack to the touch. For $$ this thing couldn't be better. Revain received it in 2 days.

Pros
  • Delivery was very fast
Cons
  • Large and bulky

Turn the motor with the socket and the ratchet. Just .

Turn the motor with a socket and ratchet. Just keep in mind that if you put a lot of force on this bolt, you will bend it as soon as you feel resistance (like I did). I ordered another one and fixed it. tried again I put the locator in the #1 cylinder hole, turned the engine in one direction, felt resistance, marked the harmonic balance. I turned the motor in the opposite direction, felt a resistance, put another stamp on the harmonic balance. Halfway between the two marks was top dead center.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Don't know

Stop hand bending

Thread fits Toyota 20/22R sockets but is barely long enough. I had to run the adjustment to its maximum length so it could be secured without a lock nut. Nearly found true TDC on the first job, but during my test run to double check my values, the threaded inner stop rod buckled and the piston passed without even feeling it turning by hand. Piston pistons, but pretty minor, I guess I live with that. I think it's good that the stopper bent more damage, but I'd be happier if it stopped the piston

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Good but not great

Works great on my 1985 Ford F250 460 big block engine!

This is the right TDC tool for your engine. I removed the #1 spark plug and installed the piston stopper. Then I got under the truck, used a socket and ratchet, and turned the motor clockwise until it stopped turning. Marked the Harmonic Balancer. Then I turned the motor counterclockwise until it stopped and made a second mark on the harmonic balancer. Found 1/2 waypoint between two markers and made a third marker to indicate TDC. I revved the engine to the 3rd mark, then installed the…

Pros
  • Slim design
Cons
  • Long delivery time
