Great for seniors! - TV & Video

In preparation for cable cuts in 2017 we got our first HD antenna for our Smart TV. We live downtown and have excellent reception with about 30 channels so the next step was to get a recorder. We started with a $30 base model and a $54 external hard drive, but it was so difficult we returned it. We then bought the TIVO BOLT and love ALL of its features. Simple, simple, simple! From the very easy setup to using the wonderful WHITE** remote, the user interface is great! We have put together an…

Buy at your own risk!

Item never worked properly! I really wanted this OTA recorder to work as I cut the cable and couldn't record the show. Setup took HOURS. It displays an image "in just a minute" and lasts forever. After it finally finished, it worked fine for a day. Okay, as a one off problem I can live with that. However, a day later, my TV tells me that I have no signal! Since then I've been getting 10 minutes of work and then no signal for 5-6 hours. It seems to be a heat related issue. Their quality control…

The really cool thing about this Tivo Romio OTA (over the air).

I bought this box for $300. It was worth it! The really cool thing about this Tivo Romio OTA (Over the Air) is that if you have a regular Tivo box cable connected in another room over Wi-Fi or Over the Air ( get that). Connection to the OTA box. So, for example, if you want to watch a football game on cable TV "that you can't get live over OTA," just record it on the console and then go to where your OTA Romio is and open another device. column and watch the live recording. It's like having two

Tivo - too many quirks

I had a Tivo a few years ago and given the high price of a DVR from a cable company I decided to try Tivo again. I've had mixed results. The software on the device is pretty good. The voice search feature is good and they keep adding new features. What annoys me is that he assigns his tuners to stations seemingly at random. Cable company DVRs have tuners assigned to the last two channels you watched. That way, if you switched back and forth, you could rewind each of them and see what you missed

Excellent video recorder for cable cutting.

Okay, I'll admit I've had a TiVo since they first released the Series 1. I've always been a fan of its simple interface and it just works. I have several other models (Series 2 and Premier) and saw a deal on this unit ($299 including lifetime service) and I had to jump on it. It is ideal for those who cut the cable and use an HD antenna for OTA stations. If you can use a screwdriver, add a Western Digital WD30EZRX hard drive for over 450 hours of HD and 3250 SD recording (easy instructions at…

what happened you used to be so good

Updated on 10/28. I have now switched to a box from the cable company. It has a better user interface, although I have to admit that I liked and missed the skip markers in more popular programs. In many ways I'm disappointed with Tivo now compared to what I've had in the past. I used Tivo from around 2002 to 2009 and liked both models. Maybe I've gotten used to the box by my provider by now, or maybe Tivo didn't keep up with the interface design, but I really struggled to get used to the menu…

It's good when it works - although it hasn't lasted a year

It's good when it works - but TiVo is a shame to bother with if you're having trouble. The concept is great. But the service they offer is even worse than the cable provider when you have a warranty issue. The process they want to follow is very time consuming and difficult to follow when trying to coordinate calls between the cable company and TiVo. I finally gave in and cut the cable when the cable company was convinced the problem was with the TiVo box and TiVo insisted there was a problem…

Best OTA DVR

I bought this for my parents as they watch a lot of OTA TV. You also don't have the patience to fiddle with selecting different TV inputs and use a connected PC to watch Netflix. The first OTA DVR I bought for them was the Dish DTVPal which was $250 at the time. It crashed almost every day and used a lot of power even in "off" mode. About 39 watts off compared to 40 watts on. It used a time-based recording scheme and uploaded 2 weeks of limited OTA program information. However, it was one of…

Amazing Cable Cutter

Amazing cable cutter. In San Francisco I have 30 channels. I'm only interested in Fox, CBS, ABC, WB and PBS. These channels are free and in HD, folks! Why are you paying $80-$100 a month? Can you really watch 200 channels a month? At the discounted price, it was only $50 more than the DVR+ I was considering. Given the hard drive, which I won't be upgrading, that's a minor thing. Just this week I was able to see the NFL on Yahoo on Tivo. Wonderful! I didn't even know that such an online channel…

Slow start, nice ecosystem, slightly frustrating OTA tuner

This is my first Tivo. I was looking for a device with a good OTA tuner for local DTV channels, DVR functionality and the ability to stream signals to other TVs or projectors around the house. Upon unboxing, I was disappointed to see that a plastic corner of the device didn't snap or stick out. Even though I squeezed it, I couldn't get it to snap into place. Obviously defective processing of the plastic housing of the device! Next, turn on the device - have a book or other distraction ready…
