The battery melted and nearly started a house fire.

Beware I have had this scanner for 3 years now. The battery that came with it died today. It hissed and smoked and if I hadn't been at the table it probably would have burned my house down. I don't trust this product. UPDATE 12/18/17: Uniden has replaced the block. Hope it works better.

Not what you expect for $500

OK. I called Uniden before ordering this $500 scanner. Told them where I live and asked if he would accept transfers and they told me yes. Well after 5 days without a single call to the device it's time to return it. I programmed it as needed with my ZIP, then tried ZIP at Fort Bliss, then El Paso, at the McGregor Test Range, then at the White Sands Missile Range, and then at the last Holloman AFB. We're in the mountains overlooking all these areas and the squadron is 14 miles away, no call…

    Terrible programming and poor reception

On paper this radio sounds like it's about to flip back. Instead, Uniden has changed every naming convention over the past 60 years of radio use, doing away with channels, frequencies, and favorites, replacing them with departments, systems, and channels (not necessarily in that order). The guide is full of shortcuts and multiple steps to program the radio. Even following the instructions does not guarantee the displayed result. I can program computers and my ham radios, I thought I could…

    Excellent scanner - Uniden BCD436HP

Very easy to use. I just put the batteries in, turned it on, hit the ZIP button and entered my zip code. He immediately started scanning. Any channels you don't want to listen to, just click on the "Avoid" button. They will return the next time you turn it on. So if you never want to listen to a specific channel, double-tap the Avoid button. Then this channel remains deactivated. There is a setting in the menu where you can view all your avoided channels and unblock them if you wish. To adjust…

So far I like it and it's easier to transport than my old HomePatrol 2

I had a HomePatrol 2 that worked great until static ruined the touchscreen. If you've ever had one, you know you can't do anything without a touchscreen. Uniden offered to swap out the screen for about $100 and a couple of weeks of waiting. So I ordered these and the software is very similar so the 'frustration factor' is not the same as for those who have never used the Sentinel software. It has pros and cons like any other digital scanner, but I think the more I use it and discover more…

Amazing scanner if you take the time to learn about its features and options

This is an amazing scanner with lots of features. For those who are new to this scanner, it will take time to become familiar with this radio and the multitude of menus and options. It may seem frustrating at first, but I found it worth taking the time and patience to fully appreciate this scanner and its capabilities. For those who live in the country, far away or on the outskirts of large metropolitan areas. Be prepared to invest in a quality antenna replacement. I live 30 miles north of the…

This is the best! c Radio scanner

I have had this scanner for exactly 1 year and am very satisfied. I started out with 4 channel quartz handheld scanners in the mid 70's but when they all went digital everyone was out of a job until manufacturers came out with affordable digital scanners. I had a programmable scanner in the 90's (still had to program each frequency) so I was a bit aware of the complexity even then. Well, digital technology is MUCH more complex in some ways, but much less in other ways. Example: If you're a fan…

Buyer's remorse! in Security and Surveillance

I have owned many Uniden Bearcat scanners over the years so I always turn to Uniden for quality products. Before that I was one of the first owners of Home Patrol 1, for which I bought all the upgrades. It was an impressive little device. So I didn't have to think twice before deciding on the BCD436HP. I'm considering going back in about a week. I have nothing against Revain and the supplier "Police Scanner Outlet" as the order and delivery was flawless. I wish I could say the same about the…

    Wireless scanners didn't impress me

I got this portable about 10 days ago and listened/scand almost every day. Getting started with the device was easy. Just enter your zip code and you're all set. Upgrades were easy with Sentinel software. This can be a satisfied customer rating. However, after several days of trying to figure out what a scan is, I think there are serious problems. 1- Emergency Absence: I live in a relatively small town (population 20,000) and was a little frustrated because I didn't know about local issues…

This plug and play scanner is perfect for the busy dad

More than 700 reviews on this product and many materials. If you're like me and don't have much time to read reviews, let me summarize this product for you: 1. It's plug and play. Enter your zip code and it will know which frequencies to scan in your area. The game has started! 2. When you travel, buy a Uniden brand GPS device, available from Revain (Uniden BC-GPSK Serial GPS Receiver for Scanner and Marine Products). Reasons to buy a Uniden device: A) when you travel, the GPS relays your…
