# Aptos (APT): how it works, supply and reviews

## In short

- **Type**: Layer-1 blockchain built around the Move language
- **Initial supply**: 1 billion APT at mainnet; 1 APT = 100,000,000 Octas
- **Risks and caveats**: APT has no fixed maximum supply; staking rewards add new tokens every epoch.
- **Checked**: 31 October 2026

## Key facts

- **Ticker**: APT
- **Official site**: [aptosnetwork.com](https://aptosnetwork.com/)

Key facts checked on 31 October 2026 against official sources.

## What is Aptos

Aptos is a proof-of-stake layer-1 blockchain whose smart contracts are written in the Move language and whose transactions are executed in parallel. APT is its native token, used for gas, staking and governance.

## Network and consensus

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Layer-1 blockchain built around the Move language |
| Consensus | AptosBFT, a Byzantine fault tolerant protocol based on Jolteon, with stake-weighted votes |
| Execution | Block-STM runs transactions in parallel without declared access lists |
| Smart contracts | Move; the Move Prover formally verifies contract properties |
| Network | Mainnet chain ID 1, two-hour epochs, never wiped |
| Launched | Mainnet launched on 12 October 2022 |

## Supply and issuance

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Initial supply | 1 billion APT at mainnet; 1 APT = 100,000,000 Octas |
| Maximum supply | No fixed cap: staking rewards increase total supply |
| Staking rewards | Maximum reward rate started at 7% a year, declining by 1.5% a year to a floor of 3.25% |
| Initial distribution | Community 51.02%, core contributors 19.00%, Foundation 16.50%, investors 13.48% |
| Vesting | Investors and core contributors were locked for four years from mainnet launch |

On 31 October 2026: 883,773,525 APT in circulation, 1,210,903,941 APT in total (source: [Aptos token supply API (linked from aptos.dev)](https://aptos-supply.dev.gcp.aptosdev.com/supply)).

## What APT is used for

- Staking with validators, whose vote weight in consensus is proportional to stake
- Voting on on-chain governance proposals through stake pools
- Paying gas and storage fees for transactions

## Who develops and governs Aptos

- **Governance**: On-chain voting by staked APT; Aptos Improvement Proposals (AIPs) are drafted on GitHub
- **Foundation**: Aptos Foundation; it held most of the community token pool at launch
- **Developer**: Aptos Labs maintains aptos-core and runs public network endpoints on behalf of the Aptos Foundation
- **Open source**: aptos-core is open source under the Apache licence

## History

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 12 October 2022 | Aptos mainnet launches with an initial supply of 1 billion APT. |
| 12 December 2024 | The Aptos Foundation updates its token supply API to report circulating supply from the start of the current month. |
| 12 October 2026 | Four years after mainnet, the lock-up of investor and core contributor tokens reaches its scheduled end. |

## Security and audits

- Move contracts can be checked with the Move Prover, a formal verifier.
- The Aptos Foundation runs a bug bounty programme.

## Security incidents

| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 18 October 2023 | Outage: The Aptos Foundation's incident report says the Aptos network delayed transactions from about 4:15 PM PDT on 18 October 2023 until about 9:30 PM PDT. It traces the cause to non-deterministic code from an August 2023 change, revealed by the new FeeStatement event, and says no committed transactions were lost and no fork occurred. | [aptosnetwork.com](https://aptosnetwork.com/currents/10-18-23-aptos-mainnet-incident-report) |

Further incidents are reported by third parties (press, incident databases) but are not confirmed in the company’s own channels, so they are not listed here.

## Risks and caveats

- APT has no fixed maximum supply; staking rewards add new tokens every epoch.
- Staked APT stays locked until the recurring lockup (currently 14 days) expires.
- A large share of the initial supply went to core contributors, the Foundation and investors.

## Questions and answers

**What is Aptos?**

Aptos is a proof-of-stake layer-1 blockchain that uses the Move language and executes transactions in parallel with Block-STM.

**When did Aptos mainnet launch?**

The Aptos mainnet launched on 12 October 2022 with 1 billion APT.

**What is the supply of APT?**

There is no fixed cap. On 31 October 2026 the Aptos supply API reported about 1.21 billion APT in total and about 884 million circulating.

**How does Aptos reach consensus?**

Validators run AptosBFT, a BFT protocol based on Jolteon, with vote weight proportional to stake.

**How much APT does a validator need?**

The current minimum to join the validator set is 1 million APT and the maximum counted stake is 50 million APT.

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
