## What is Auroracoin

Auroracoin (AUR) is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency for Iceland, started on 24 January 2014. It was first based on Litecoin and in 2016 adopted DigiByte's multi-algorithm mining. Half of the coins were pre-mined for an airdrop to Icelandic residents; unclaimed coins were destroyed.

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Own proof-of-work blockchain, originally based on Litecoin |
| Consensus | Multi-algorithm proof of work: Scrypt, SHA256D, Qubit, Skein and Groestl |
| Block time | 61-second target since the May 2016 multi-algorithm change |

## Supply and issuance

|---|---|
| Maximum supply | 23,318,098 AUR; after 5,345,000 AUR were destroyed, total supply is 17,973,098 AUR |
| Initial distribution | 50% pre-mine for an airdrop to Icelandic residents in 2014-2015, using national ID; about half claimed, the rest destroyed |

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
