## What is DigiByte

DigiByte is a proof-of-work UTXO blockchain, running since January 2014, with 15-second blocks secured by five mining algorithms. DGB is its native coin, and the network also supports DigiAssets, Digi-ID logins and the DigiDollar stablecoin.

## Network and consensus

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Independent layer-1 UTXO blockchain |
| Consensus | Proof of work using five algorithms in parallel: SHA-256d, Scrypt, Skein, Qubit and Odocrypt |
| Block time | 15 seconds |
| Launched | January 2014; the genesis block cites a USA Today headline of 10 January 2014 |
| Smart contracts | No general smart contracts; native custom assets through DigiAssets |

## Supply and issuance

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | 21,000,000,000 DGB |
| Issuance | Block rewards fall gradually every month rather than through halvings |
| Initial distribution | 0.5% premine used for giveaways and development; the rest is mined |

## What DGB is used for

- Payments and transfers that confirm in about 15 seconds
- Paying fees to issue and move DigiAssets
- Collateral for the DigiDollar stablecoin, locked in on-chain reserves

## Who develops and governs DigiByte

- **Developer**: DigiByte Core, an open-source project; development moved to the DigiByte-Core GitHub organisation in 2020
- **Open source**: Yes; MIT license
- **Governance**: No on-chain governance; protocol upgrades are activated through miner signalling (BIP9)

## History

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| January 2014 | DigiByte mainnet launches; the genesis block cites a news headline from 10 January 2014. |
| 2020 | Core development moves to the DigiByte-Core GitHub organisation. |

## Security and audits

- Mining is split across five proof-of-work algorithms aimed at different hardware, and Odocrypt changes itself every 10 days to resist ASIC dominance.

## Risks and caveats

- DigiDollar relies on an oracle roster to deliver the USD/DGB price used for its DGB collateral.
- A 0.5% premine was set aside at launch for giveaways and development.

## Questions and answers

**What is DigiByte (DGB)?**

DigiByte is a proof-of-work UTXO blockchain launched in January 2014 with 15-second blocks. DGB is its native coin.

**What is the maximum supply of DigiByte?**

DGB is capped at 21 billion coins, issued on a monthly-reduction schedule without halvings.

**How does DigiByte reach consensus?**

Miners use any of five proof-of-work algorithms: SHA-256d, Scrypt, Skein, Qubit and Odocrypt.

**What is DigiDollar?**

DigiDollar is DigiByte's native non-custodial stablecoin, backed by time-locked DGB collateral held in on-chain reserves.

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
