## What is Dimecoin

Dimecoin (DIME) is an open-source cryptocurrency whose genesis block dates from 23 December 2013. It started as a proof-of-work fork of Bitcoin using the Quark hash and, since 2023, runs a hybrid proof-of-work and proof-of-stake chain with masternodes.

## Network and consensus

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Own UTXO blockchain, originally a fork of Bitcoin with a modified hash algorithm and block time. |
| Consensus | Hybrid proof of work (Quark hash) and proof of stake since 2023, with automatic checkpointing. |
| Launched | Genesis block on 23 December 2013. |
| Block time | About 64 seconds per block on average (white paper v1.05, written before the 2023 switch to the hybrid model). |
| Masternodes | Masternodes add network services; a masternode needs proof of ownership of 500,000,000 DIME. |

## Supply and issuance

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Initial distribution | No ICO, IEO or other fundraising at launch. |
| Issuance | The block reward is split 45% to masternodes, 45% to miners/stakers and 10% to the foundation. |
| Halving | The white paper describes a block reward halving policy. |
| Inflation | The white paper reports about 3.6% supply growth from 25 April 2017 to 25 April 2018. |

## What DIME is used for

- DIME is a digital currency for everyday payments.
- DIME can be mined, staked or used as masternode collateral to earn block rewards.
- Users can hold DIME in the Dimecoin Core full-node wallet or the Electrum-Dime light wallet.

## Who develops and governs Dimecoin

- **Open source**: Dimecoin Core is open source under the MIT licence on GitHub.
- **Developer**: Developed by community contributors; the project says no central entity is in control.
- **Foundation**: 10% of each block reward goes to a 'foundation'; the documentation does not name a legal entity.
- **Governance**: The white paper says the project has changed hands several times since 2013.

## History

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 23 December 2013 | The Dimecoin genesis block is created. |
| 2023 | Dimecoin moves to a hybrid proof-of-work and proof-of-stake consensus. |
| 23 September 2023 | Dimecoin Core 2.3.0.0 is published; the roadmap says it re-enables staking. |
| 20 March 2024 | The first beta of the Electrum-Dime light wallet (0.0.1.0) is published. |
| 11 October 2026 | Dimecoin Core 2.4.0.0 is published with wallet fixes, sync improvements and security hardening. |

## Security and audits

- Dimecoin added automatic checkpointing to protect the chain against hashing-related attacks.
- The 2.4.0.0 release notes say a full rebuild of the historical PoW/PoS chain without peers is an unresolved limitation.

## Security incidents

No security incident is recorded in the sources checked on 1 November 2026 (the company’s own channels and incident databases): [defillama.com/hacks](https://defillama.com/hacks), [hacked.slowmist.io/search](https://hacked.slowmist.io/search/), [rekt.news/leaderboard](https://rekt.news/leaderboard/), [github.com/dime-coin/dimecoin/releases](https://github.com/dime-coin/dimecoin/releases), [dimecoinnetwork.com](https://www.dimecoinnetwork.com/)

## Risks and caveats

- 10% of block rewards go to a foundation that is not identified as a legal entity.
- The 2.4.0.0 notes say rebuilding the full chain from scratch without peers remains an unresolved limitation.
- Small network: the explorer showed 42 masternodes on 1 November 2026.

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
