## What is KuCoin

KuCoin Token (KCS) is the token of the KuCoin crypto exchange and the native gas and governance token of KCC (KuCoin Community Chain). Holders get perks on KuCoin, and the exchange regularly buys back and burns KCS.

## Network and consensus

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Exchange token of KuCoin; native coin of KCC, an EVM-compatible public chain |
| Consensus | KCC uses Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA), adapted from Bor and Heco |
| Validators | The top 29 validators by KCS votes are selected for each epoch |
| Launched | KCS ecosystem established in 2017; KCC chain launched on 16 June 2021 |

## Supply and issuance

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | Initial cap of 200 million KCS, to be reduced by burns to a final 100 million |
| Fee burn | Monthly buybacks from the market and burns, sized by KuCoin's overall monthly revenue |
| Final supply | 100 million KCS once burns are complete |
| Staking rewards | On KCC, a fixed amount of KCS per block is paid from a reserve pool of fees to validators and stakers |

## What KCS is used for

- Gas fee for transactions on KCC
- Voting in KCC on-chain governance and staking to KCC validators
- KuCoin loyalty perks, unlocked by staking at least 1 KCS on the platform
- Participation in BurningDrop and GemVote events on KuCoin

## Who develops and governs KuCoin

- **Company**: KuCoin, the exchange that issues KCS and runs the buyback-and-burn
- **Foundation**: KCS Foundation: the KuCoin core team, KCC GoDAO Foundation, investors and KCS-holder representatives
- **Governance**: KCC block reward size is a global parameter set by the foundations

## History

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 2017 | KCS ecosystem established alongside the KuCoin exchange. |
| 16 June 2021 | KCC (KuCoin Community Chain) launched, with KCS as its native gas token. |
| 24 June 2022 | Ishikari hard fork on KCC: validators began sharing mining rewards with their stakers. |
| 9 October 2023 | Amazon hard fork on KCC, including staking-contract changes to prepare for migrating the KuCoin KCS Bonus. |

## Security and audits

- On KCC, a Slash contract records missed blocks and slashes the unclaimed rewards of validators that pass a threshold.

## Risks and caveats

- KCS is closely tied to one company: burns depend on KuCoin's revenue and most perks exist only on the KuCoin platform.
- KCC validator set is small (29 per epoch) and key reward parameters are set by the foundations.
- KCS staked through KuCoin Earn is handled by the KuCoin team rather than the holder's own wallet.

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
