# Monad (MON): how it works, supply and reviews

## In short

- **Type**: Layer-1 blockchain, compatible with Ethereum (EVM)
- **Initial distribution**: Initial supply of 100 billion MON at mainnet launch
- **Risks and caveats**: Total MON supply grows through block rewards; team, investor and treasury tokens unlock from late 2026 to Q4 2029.
- **Checked**: 31 October 2026

## Key facts

## What is Monad

Monad is an EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain with about 300 ms block frequency and 600 ms finality, using MonadBFT consensus and asynchronous, parallel execution. Its native token MON pays transaction fees and is staked to secure the network.

## Network and consensus

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Layer-1 blockchain, compatible with Ethereum (EVM) |
| Consensus | MonadBFT, a proof-of-stake BFT consensus; up to 200 validators in the active set by stake weight |
| Block time | 300 ms block frequency; speculative finality at 300 ms, full finality at 600 ms |
| Chain ID | Monad mainnet chain ID 143 |
| Programming language | Client written from scratch in C++ and Rust; consensus and execution code is open source |
| Launched | Monad public mainnet launched on 24 November 2025 |

## Supply and issuance

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Initial distribution | Initial supply of 100 billion MON at mainnet launch |
| Allocation | Ecosystem development ~38.5%, team ~27%, investors ~19.7%, public sale up to 7.5%, airdrop ~3.3%, Category Labs treasury ~3.95% |
| Unlocks | About 10.8% circulated at launch; team, investor and Category Labs tokens are locked for at least one year and fully unlocked by Q4 2029 |
| Inflation | New MON is minted every block as a validator and staker reward; current docs set it at 18 MON per block (25 MON at launch) |
| Fee burn | The base component of every transaction fee is burned |

## What MON is used for

- Paying transaction fees on Monad
- Staking and delegating to validators to secure the network and earn block rewards
- Locked team and investor tokens cannot be staked

## Who develops and governs Monad

- **Foundation**: The Monad Foundation, set up on 16 December 2024, facilitates validator-led governance, documentation and ecosystem development
- **Developer**: Category Labs (formerly Monad Labs), led by CEO James Hunsaker, builds the technology
- **Founders**: Keone Hon and Eunice Giarta moved to the Monad Foundation when it was created
- **Open source**: Consensus (monad-bft) and execution (monad) clients are published by Category Labs on GitHub

## History

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 9 April 2024 | Monad Labs raises $225 million in a round led by Paradigm. |
| 16 December 2024 | Monad Foundation is created; Monad Labs is renamed Category Labs. |
| 10 November 2025 | MON tokenomics are published ahead of a public sale on Coinbase's token sales platform. |
| 24 November 2025 | Monad public mainnet goes live. |

## Security and audits

- MonadBFT is designed to resist tail-forking, a problem in pipelined BFT consensus.
- Validators must be among the top 200 by stake to join the active set; delegators share in block rewards.

## Security incidents

No security incident is recorded in the sources checked on 31 October 2026 (the company’s own channels and incident databases): [defillama.com/hacks](https://defillama.com/hacks), [rekt.news/leaderboard](https://rekt.news/leaderboard/), [hacked.slowmist.io/search](https://hacked.slowmist.io/search/), [monad.xyz/blog](https://www.monad.xyz/blog), [status.monad.xyz](https://status.monad.xyz/)

## Risks and caveats

- Total MON supply grows through block rewards; team, investor and treasury tokens unlock from late 2026 to Q4 2029.
- Monad is a young network: public mainnet launched on 24 November 2025.
- The per-block reward has changed since launch (25 MON in the tokenomics post, 18 MON in current docs).

## Questions and answers

**What is Monad?**

Monad is an EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain with 300 ms blocks and 600 ms finality; its public mainnet launched on 24 November 2025.

**Who created Monad?**

Monad Labs, now Category Labs (CEO James Hunsaker), builds the software; the Monad Foundation, joined by Keone Hon and Eunice Giarta, stewards the ecosystem.

**What is the supply of MON?**

The initial supply was 100 billion MON; supply rises with block rewards and falls with burned base fees.

**What is MON used for?**

MON pays transaction fees and is staked or delegated to validators to secure the network.

**How does Monad reach consensus?**

Through MonadBFT, a proof-of-stake BFT protocol, with execution pipelined after consensus.

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
