## What is Navio

Navio (NAV) is a layer-1 privacy blockchain derived from Bitcoin Core, where every transaction is confidential by default using the BLSCT protocol. It is the successor to Navcoin, launched in 2014, and its mainnet started in July 2026 with supply migrated from Navcoin.

## Network and consensus

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Layer-1 blockchain derived from the Bitcoin Core codebase. |
| Consensus | Proof-of-Private-Stake (PoPS): validators prove stake without revealing which coins they hold. |
| Block time | 120-second blocks on mainnet with 8 NAV steady-state rewards. |
| Launched | Mainnet genesis timestamp 1 July 2026, 13:00 UTC (Navio Core 0.1.0). |
| Smart contracts | Confidential tokens and NFTs are native to BLSCT; amounts, balances and parties are hidden. |
| Programming language | Node software naviod is a Bitcoin Core derivative. |

## Supply and issuance

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | Uncapped. |
| Initial distribution | Block 1 minted the whole initial supply of 81,743,678 NAV, migrated from Navcoin. |
| Issuance | Steady-state block reward of 8 NAV on mainnet. |
| Staking rewards | Minimum stake on mainnet is 10,000 NAV; staking runs through the separate navio-staker program. |
| Fee burn | Fees sent to OP_RETURN outputs are counted as burned by the explorer. |

## What NAV is used for

- NAV pays transaction fees on the Navio chain.
- NAV is staked to produce blocks under Proof-of-Private-Stake.

## Who develops and governs Navio

- **Developer**: Developed in the open on GitHub by the nav-io organisation (created 29 March 2023).
- **Open source**: Docs are MIT-licensed by the Navio contributors.
- **Foundation**: The legacy Navcoin GitHub organisation dates from November 2015.
- **Governance**: Navcoin described itself as a DAO in which every NAV holder could stake and vote.
- **Company**: navcoin.org now redirects to nav.io with a rebrand notice.

## History

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 2014 | Navcoin launched with no pre-mine or ICO. |
| 22 February 2017 | The navcoin-core repository (a Bitcoin Core 0.13 fork) was created on GitHub. |
| 29 March 2023 | The nav-io GitHub organisation for Navio was created. |
| 28 June 2026 | Navio Core 0.1.0, the first stable release, was published to launch the mainnet. |
| 1 July 2026 | Navio mainnet genesis block (1 July 2026, 13:00 UTC). |
| 20 August 2026 | Mainnet block production halted at height 33,792; Navio Core 0.1.8 fixed the cause. |

## Security and audits

- Navio Core 0.1.8 fixed the 20 August 2026 mainnet block-production halt caused by a duplicate staked-commitment transaction.
- Navio Core 0.1.9 fixed a consensus-critical bug that could lead to network forks.

## Security incidents

| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 20 August 2026 | Network halt: Navio mainnet block production halted at height 33,792 after a transaction re-adding an already staked commitment entered node mempools; Navio Core 0.1.8 fixed it. No loss of funds was stated. | [github.com](https://github.com/nav-io/navio-core/releases) |

## Official NAV contracts

| Network | Contract address |
|---|---|
| BNB Smart Chain | [0xbfef6ccfc830d3baca4f6766a0d4aaa242ca9f3d](https://bscscan.com/token/0xbfef6ccfc830d3baca4f6766a0d4aaa242ca9f3d) |

NAV is native to the Navio chain. The contract listed is wNAV (Wrapped Navcoin) on BNB Smart Chain, the intermediate token of the Navcoin to Navio swap bridge.

## Risks and caveats

- Supply is uncapped; new NAV is issued as staking rewards.
- The Navcoin to Navio swap is one-way and runs through a bridge with an intermediate BNB Smart Chain token.
- The network is new: it halted once in August 2026 and needed a consensus-critical fix soon after launch.

## Questions and answers

**What is Navio?**

Navio is a privacy-focused layer-1 blockchain derived from Bitcoin Core in which every transaction is confidential by default. It is the successor to Navcoin.

**Is Navcoin now Navio?**

Yes. navcoin.org says Navcoin has rebranded to Navio, and the Navio mainnet launched with supply migrated from Navcoin.

**How do I swap Navcoin to Navio?**

Through the one-way bridge at bridge.nav.io: Navcoin is deposited for wNAV on BNB Smart Chain, and burning wNAV pays out native Navio.

**What is the maximum supply of Navio?**

There is no cap. The mainnet started with 81,743,678 NAV and adds 8 NAV per block as staking rewards.

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
