# Nerva (XNV): how it works, supply and reviews

## In short

- **Type**: Privacy coin forked from Monero, with its own blockchain.
- **Maximum supply**: About 18.44 million XNV of primary emission, plus a perpetual tail emission reached in early 2021.
- **Risks and caveats**: Hard fork 14 is mandatory: nodes and wallets older than v0.4.0.0 stop working with the network after block 4,480,000.
- **Checked**: 1 November 2026

## What is Nerva

Nerva (XNV) is a privacy cryptocurrency forked from Monero that hides the sender, receiver and amount of every transaction by default. It uses a CPU-only proof-of-work algorithm (Cryptonight Adaptive) with no mining pools.

## Network and consensus

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Privacy coin forked from Monero, with its own blockchain. |
| Consensus | Proof of work, CPU-only; no ASICs, GPU rigs or pools. |
| Mining | Anyone with a computer can mine; the docs call this a guiding principle of the project. |
| Hash algorithm | Cryptonight Adaptive; v0.4.0.0 introduces CryptoNight-Adaptive v8 at hard fork 14. |
| Block time | 60 seconds. |
| Launched | Genesis block on 1 May 2018. |
| Privacy | Ring size 16 (up from 5) from hard fork 14, with CLSAG signatures and Bulletproofs+. |
| Upgrades | Hard forks ship as mandatory releases: v0.3.0.0 for hard fork 13 at block 4,320,000, then v0.4.0.0 for hard fork 14. |
| Hardware wallets | The docs describe a sideloaded Ledger app tested only on the Ledger Nano S with firmware 1.5.5; the v0.4.0.0 release notes say hardware wallets cannot sign HF14 transactions. |
| Hardware wallets from HF14 | Hardware wallets cannot sign hard fork 14 transactions, because the Ledger protocol predates CLSAG. |
| Multisig | Creating new multisig wallets is disabled; existing multisig wallets can spend only until hard fork 14. |

## Supply and issuance

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | About 18.44 million XNV of primary emission, plus a perpetual tail emission reached in early 2021. |
| Issuance | Tail emission of 0.3 XNV per block, about 157,800 XNV a year (0.82% inflation as stated in the docs). |
| Initial distribution | 1% premine (180,000 XNV); no ICO and no investor allocation. |

## What XNV is used for

- XNV is a payment coin for fast, low-fee private transfers.
- XNV is paid to CPU miners as the block reward.
- Developers can integrate XNV payments through the project's APIs, including as an in-game currency.

## Who develops and governs Nerva

- **Governance**: Community-driven open-source project with no company and no VC roadmap.
- **Founders**: The original creator received the 1% premine and left the project in 2021.
- **Open source**: Code is published by the Nerva Project under GPL-2.0-or-later.
- **Developer**: Core software releases are published on GitHub (nerva-project/nerva).

## History

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 1 May 2018 | Nerva's genesis block is mined. |
| 2021 | Primary emission of about 18.44 million XNV ends and tail emission begins (early 2021). |
| 2021 | Nerva services move to the nerva.one domain (Q4 2021). |
| 30 January 2026 | XNV is listed on the NonKyc exchange after 2025 delistings from XeggeX and TradeOgre. |
| 21 July 2026 | Hard fork 13 activates at block 4,320,000 on 21 July 2026, moving the network to CryptoNight-Adaptive v6. |
| 25 October 2026 | v0.4.0.0 'Legacy Restored' is released for hard fork 14 at block 4,480,000 (about 10 November 2026). |

## Security and audits

- Nerva says CPU-only, pool-free mining makes every miner run a full node, which it presents as resistance to 51% attacks.
- v0.4.0.0 switches transactions to CLSAG signatures and Bulletproofs+ and raises the ring size to 16.
- Nerva's 26 October 2026 post on nerva.one says the v0.4.0.0 release updates Unbound to 1.26.1, which fixes critical DNSSEC vulnerabilities.
- Nerva's docs say its multisig code is an older, unaudited variant, so creating new multisig wallets has been disabled.

## Security incidents

No security incident is recorded in the sources checked on 1 November 2026 (the company’s own channels and incident databases): [defillama.com/hacks](https://defillama.com/hacks), [hacked.slowmist.io](https://hacked.slowmist.io/), [rekt.news/leaderboard](https://rekt.news/leaderboard/), [nerva.one](https://nerva.one/), [github.com/nerva-project/nerva/releases](https://github.com/nerva-project/nerva/releases), [nerva.one/nerva-v0-4-0-0-legacy-restored-hard-fo](https://nerva.one/nerva-v0-4-0-0-legacy-restored-hard-fork-14-is-here/)

## Risks and caveats

- Hard fork 14 is mandatory: nodes and wallets older than v0.4.0.0 stop working with the network after block 4,480,000.
- Existing multisig wallets cannot spend after hard fork 14; Nerva tells holders to move funds out before block 4,480,000.
- Ledger hardware wallets cannot sign hard fork 14 transactions.
- There is no company behind Nerva; development depends on volunteers after the original creator left in 2021.
- Nerva was delisted from XeggeX and TradeOgre in 2025 and now trades on a few small exchanges.
- Supply is not capped: a tail emission of 0.3 XNV per block continues indefinitely.

## Questions and answers

**What is Nerva (XNV)?**

Nerva is a privacy coin forked from Monero that hides the sender, receiver and amount of every transaction by default and is mined only with CPUs.

**Can Nerva be mined with a GPU or in a pool?**

No. Nerva's Cryptonight Adaptive proof of work is CPU-only and has no pool support; each miner mines solo.

**What is the supply of XNV?**

About 18.44 million XNV were mined by early 2021; since then a tail emission of 0.3 XNV per block adds about 157,800 XNV a year.

**Who created Nerva?**

Nerva launched in May 2018 with a 1% premine to its creator, who left in 2021; it is now run by community volunteers.

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
