## What is Request Network

Request Network is a payment protocol for creating, paying and reconciling crypto and stablecoin payment requests directly between wallets. It is stewarded by a Swiss foundation and its token, REQ, is used for governance and is burned when requests are stored on-chain.

## Network and consensus

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Payment protocol, not a blockchain; it stores payment requests and reconciles on-chain payments |
| Runs on | Request contents are stored in IPFS; only the content ID (CID) is written on-chain, on Gnosis Chain |
| Payment chains | Common EVM chains (Ethereum, BNB Chain, Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism) and Tron; payers can pay in USDC or USDT |
| Custody | Non-custodial: funds move directly from payer to recipient |
| Launched | Live on-chain since 2017 |
| Products | Three products: the Dashboard, the Secure Payment Page and the API |

## Supply and issuance

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | Fixed supply of 1 billion REQ, all distributed at genesis; no inflation or new issuance |
| Initial distribution | Public token sale (2017) 49.97%, early contributors 20.01%, team and advisors 18.01%, foundation 12.01% |
| Fee burn | REQ is burned each time a request is stored on-chain |
| Vesting | No vesting schedule; the full supply is already vested |

## What REQ is used for

- Burned when a request is stored on-chain
- Governance over the protocol and the foundation

## Who develops and governs Request Network

- **Legal entity**: Request Network, a Swiss Stiftung (foundation) in Zug, registered under CHE-422.666.391
- **Foundation**: Chairman of the Foundation Board: Christophe Lassuyt
- **CEO**: Tristan Wallaert
- **Funding**: No venture funds; the foundation is funded through REQ
- **Founders**: Founded and incubated at Y Combinator
- **Open source**: JavaScript library on GitHub under the MIT licence

## History

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 2017 | Request Network launches through a token sale that raised approximately 100,000 ETH. |
| 7 November 2017 | The RequestNetwork/requestNetwork code repository is created on GitHub. |

## Security and audits

- The hosted Secure Payment Page checks that a transaction targets official Request Network contracts before the payer signs.
- Optional wallet screening checks the paying wallet with Hypernative against sanctions, money-laundering and terror-financing signals.

## Security incidents

Incidents are reported by third parties (press, incident databases) but are not confirmed in the company’s own channels, so none is listed here.

## Risks and caveats

- Request Network says it holds no payments licence or VASP registration because it never holds funds.
- The 2017 whitepaper is a historical document; parts of the early token design have changed.
- Cross-chain payments are routed through bridges and are not instant; final status comes from the webhook.

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
