# Verge (XVG): how it works, supply and reviews

## In short

- **Type**: Own proof-of-work blockchain (Layer 1)
- **Maximum supply**: 16,521,951,238 XVG (about 16.5 billion)
- **Risks and caveats**: The project shipped a chain fork and a time-warp patch in 2018 and re-org prevention in 2021; the current 6-block re-org limit is not a guarantee against mining attacks.

## What is Verge

Verge (XVG) is an open-source proof-of-work cryptocurrency for everyday payments, created in 2014 as DogeCoinDark and renamed Verge in 2016. It is mined with five hashing algorithms, has a capped supply of about 16.5 billion XVG, and its wallets route traffic over Tor. It is run by volunteers, with no company, pre-mine or ICO.

## Network and consensus

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Own proof-of-work blockchain (Layer 1) |
| Consensus | Proof of work with five algorithms: Scrypt, X17, Lyra2rev2, myr-groestl and blake2s |
| Block time | 30 seconds |
| Privacy | Tor in all official wallets to hide users' IP addresses; optional dual-key stealth addresses; the ledger itself is public |
| Reorganisation limit | Current nodes refuse automatic chain switches deeper than 6 blocks; the project says this is not finality |
| Smart contracts | Not available; listed as under development (Miniscript) |

## Supply and issuance

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | 16,521,951,238 XVG (about 16.5 billion) |
| Initial distribution | No pre-mine and no ICO |
| Issuance | Block reward falls in steps and reaches 0 from block 7,200,001 |
| Transaction fee | 0.1 XVG per kB (as of 31 October 2026) |

## What XVG is used for

- XVG is used as a payment currency and to pay network transaction fees.
- XVG pays for Verge Secure Messaging, encrypted wallet-to-wallet messages added in Verge Core v26.7.

## Who develops and governs Verge

- **Developer**: Volunteer open-source community; no company behind the coin
- **Funding**: Developers and community donations, plus a merchandise store and instant exchange
- **Open source**: Source code on GitHub (vergecurrency/verge)

## History

| Date | Event |

| 2014 | Created as DogeCoinDark. |
| 2016 | Rebranded to Verge Currency. |
| 7 April 2018 | Release 4.0.2 forks the chain to change how blocks are accepted from block 2,042,000. |
| 25 May 2018 | Release 4.0.2a is patched to prevent time-warp attacks. |
| 14 November 2019 | Verge Core v6.0.0 hard fork adds a new halving schedule after block 3.7 million. |

| 6 July 2026 | Verge Core v26.7 launches encrypted secure messaging. |

## Security and audits

- Open-source code on GitHub; official binaries should only be downloaded from the official site or GitHub.
- Wallets route network traffic over Tor; the blockchain itself is public, so amounts and addresses are visible.
- In 2018 the project shipped a fork release and a patch against time-warp attacks; in 2021 it added re-org prevention and checkpoints.

## Security incidents

| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 7 April 2018 | Exploit: Release 4.0.2 forked the chain to change how blocks are accepted from block 2,042,000. The release note gives no cause or loss figure. Funds returned: not stated | [github.com](https://github.com/vergecurrency/verge/releases/tag/4.0.2) |
| 25 May 2018 | Exploit: Release 4.0.2a patched the node software to prevent time-warp attacks. The release note gives no loss figure. Funds returned: not stated | [github.com](https://github.com/vergecurrency/verge/releases/tag/4.0.2a) |
| 24 February 2021 | Exploit: Verge Core v7.0.0 added re-org prevention and checkpoints and raised the minimum protocol version. The release note gives no cause or loss figure. Funds returned: not stated | [github.com](https://github.com/vergecurrency/verge/releases/tag/v7.0.0) |

## Risks and caveats

- The project shipped a chain fork and a time-warp patch in 2018 and re-org prevention in 2021; the current 6-block re-org limit is not a guarantee against mining attacks.
- Tor hides IP addresses, but the ledger is public, so transactions can still be traced on-chain.
- No company or foundation is responsible for the project; development depends on volunteers and donations.

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
