# VeThor (VTHO): how it works, supply and reviews

## In short

- **Type**: Gas token (VIP-180, ERC-20 compatible) on the VeChainThor layer-1 blockchain
- **Maximum supply**: None; VTHO has no fixed maximum supply
- **Risks and caveats**: VTHO has no supply cap; new VTHO is created every block and only the base fee is burned.
- **Checked**: 28 October 2026

## Key facts

- **Ticker**: VTHO

- **Source code**: [github.com/vechain/thor](https://github.com/vechain/thor)

Data: CoinGecko (trading activity) and CoinPaprika (links), 2026-10-27. Only projects that still trade with meaningful volume are listed.

## What is VeThor

VeThor (VTHO) is the gas token of the VeChainThor blockchain, used to pay for transactions and smart contract execution. VeChain uses a dual-token model: VET carries value and is staked, while VTHO, generated by staked VET, pays network costs.

## Network and consensus

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Gas token (VIP-180, ERC-20 compatible) on the VeChainThor layer-1 blockchain |
| Consensus | Delegated proof of stake with 101 validators since the Hayabusa hard fork (2 December 2025); previously proof of authority |
| Launched | VeChainThor genesis block in June 2018 |
| Block time | 10 seconds |
| Smart contracts | Yes; VeChainThor builds on Ethereum's building blocks |

## Supply and issuance

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | None; VTHO has no fixed maximum supply |
| Issuance | New VTHO each block, as a function of total VET staked (1200 × 64 × √staked VET per year); before Hayabusa, by holding VET |
| Fee burn | Since the Galactica hard fork the base fee is burned and the priority fee goes to the block's validator |
| Staking rewards | Generated VTHO goes to validators and delegators who stake VET |

## What VTHO is used for

- Pays fees for transfers and smart contract execution on VeChainThor.
- Rewards validators and delegators for producing blocks and securing the network.
- Separates the cost of using the network from the market value of VET, aiming at predictable transaction costs.

## Who develops and governs VeThor

- **Foundation**: VeChain Foundation; under proof of authority its steering committee authorised the block producers
- **Validators**: 101 validators produce blocks; anyone can stake VET through StarGate and delegate to a validator
- **Validator stake**: Running a validator requires staking 25 million VET
- **Governance**: VET holders can take part in network governance decisions

## History

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| June 2018 | The VeChainThor genesis block is mined and the network goes live. |
| 17 February 2025 | VIP-251 proposes an EIP-1559-style fee model that burns the base fee and pays a priority fee to validators. |
| July 2025 | StarGate, the NFT-based VET staking platform, launches in a bootstrapping phase. |
| 2 December 2025 | The Hayabusa hard fork moves VeChainThor to delegated proof of stake and ties VTHO generation to staked VET. |

## Security and audits

- The base fee adjusts automatically with network use and is burned, which discourages validators from manipulating it.

## Official VTHO contracts

| Network | Contract address |
|---|---|
| VeChainThor | 0x0000000000000000000000000000456E65726779 |

VTHO is a built-in token of VeChainThor with a fixed system contract address.

## Risks and caveats

- VTHO has no supply cap; new VTHO is created every block and only the base fee is burned.
- Only VET that is staked through validators or StarGate generates VTHO since the Hayabusa fork; plain holding no longer does.
- Becoming a validator requires 25 million VET, and the active set is limited to 101 validators.

## Questions and answers

**What is VeThor (VTHO)?**

VTHO is the gas token of the VeChainThor blockchain. It pays for transactions and smart contract execution, while VET is the network's value and staking token.

**How is VTHO created?**

Since the Hayabusa hard fork on 2 December 2025, new VTHO is generated every block as a function of the total VET staked, and goes to validators and delegators.

**What is the maximum supply of VTHO?**

There is none. VTHO supply grows through generation and shrinks as base fees are burned.

**Who runs VeChainThor?**

101 validators produce blocks under delegated proof of stake; the VeChain Foundation previously authorised the proof-of-authority block producers.

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
