I bought this Patriot RAM to upgrade a six year old Dell PC from 8GB to 16GB. The computer only had two memory slots, so I had to remove the existing RAM and replace it with these two Patriot DIMMs. When the system was powered back on, it recognized the new RAM and everything worked fine after the update. The price of this RAM was similar to other manufacturers, but I chose Patriot because I've used this brand a lot to upgrade RAM over the past few years. To be honest I have no idea why RAM chips need heat shields. I've never bought RAM with a heat shield. Spring . This doesn't seem to have increased the RAM price or affected the installation of RAM chips on the motherboard. The download speed has definitely increased since I upgraded the RAM and my memory intensive Adobe software now loads and runs much faster. I've never had a Patriot RAM chip fail in any of my computers, so I'm sticking with the brand.
