This chef's knife guard was a great purchase. The protection is made of VERY thick fabric. I don't feel the knife penetrating the fabric. I bought it for my work bag. I found my steak knife constantly cutting through my pocket. I bought several packed lunches before finding this item. Since I bought this protector I haven't had to buy a new lunch bag. I tried to buy a plastic guard but found my knife didn't fit/slid in as well as this one. My knife goes in so smoothly. It fits perfectly. I don't think he'll be holding a big knife. There is a velcro strap that keeps the knife in place so it doesn't slip or move. I didn't have to wash this item as I always put a clean knife in it, but it looks like it could be washed. When I'm ready to wash it, I plan to put it in a laundry bag to prevent damage. The color I bought was black. The color is true black and matches my lunch bag. I will definitely buy this again. This is a great product.
