There is a TECHNIQUE to make it work

I read the reviews and was skeptical. I really need this to save me from cutting dowels, especially with large pieces that I can't lift on a bandsaw. I tried and all the plugs broke - I was furious - a waste of money as other reviews have said. But no. Some other people like this thing - I should have found out. There must be a way! So I researched and discovered TECHNIQUE! First you only need to drill with grain - you can see in my photos an example of a piece of alder where I have drilled a sample with end grain and cross grain/cross grain will chip. Outside. It would be great to do a cross grain - that's not going to happen, the world is an imperfect place. Next, set the drill setting to maximum speed. You then insert the drill into the pilot hole, starting about 1/4 inch from the job. one piece. Start the drill, and once it reaches full speed simply drop it slowly into the workpiece and let the weight of the drill begin the cut. Walk slowly with almost no pressure. Once you've cut the cut in half, you can apply more pressure and pull the drill back out when you're done fast or slow. I made 112 alder dowels today with this technique with no problems. Some people say it only works on hardwood - it's not true. I've attached a picture with 3 pieces of wood - alder/pine/ and Low's cheap 'whitewood' board. Worked great for everyone. Finally, you can cut the end caps with a miter saw, but secure the end caps first before you cut them or they will fly. If you have a band saw, use it. If you love woodworking enough to buy this product get a band saw, if you don't have one seriously you deserve one. Great tool - be patient - practice makes perfect.
