Like one reviewer, I had a 19+ year old cat with severe arthritis. These cats do not squat, which means urine will squirt through the sides of the box. There really isn't a perfect box for my cat because she was so nifty enough to go in one side of the box and come out the other. Because she couldn't just turn around. In other words, low walls on all sides helped her "use" the tray as she could still pop out. My solution at first was to only use a small amount of filler to make it easier for her to stand and walk inside. This allowed her to penetrate far enough into the box that the stream of urine was more or less held back. But as she got older she just couldn't walk far enough because she was very unstable and so the urine squirted out of the box. My solution was to use pee pads outside the box to soak up the pee. Was it possible to abandon the box and use only gaskets? Naturally. But anyone with a hypergeriatric cat knows that habits are hard to break and that the litter box is ingrained.
