I have to tell you that the negative reviews put me off at first. Eventually I gave up and tried this skimmer. Not only is it very powerful, it pulls the skimmer out of water that is darker than any other skimmer I've used before. Overall it took about 5 days for the item to break in enough to work effectively. During the first five days the skimmer produced so many microbubbles that I had to use a piece of filter cord to shut off the water return to break up the air bubbles entering my aquarium. However, after about a week there were fewer bubbles and the skimmer worked so well that it only took a few days to break in and run continuously. The skimmer requires almost no setup. I only adjust and adjust the water flow every 4 days or so. I simply turn off the air supply and drain the skimmer completely to eliminate any air pockets that have formed, and in less than 30 seconds I'm ready to go again. For the money, this skimmer is my absolute favorite. I'll say it's LOUD. Very loud. For example, if your aquarium is in your bedroom where you sleep, you should look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a reliable skimmer that will perform consistently and require minimal maintenance, this thing is great. At the moment I have it in my aquarium for a little over a month. The only reason it didn't get five stars from me is the noise the pump makes (I'm considering getting a different, quieter water pump for it). Give him a chance!
