They have an array of 'magic' or 'rice' lights inside and are for effect, not illumination. I hung them on the trees in the yard, made sure there were no leaves on top of the solar panel, and they worked fine. Come in the dark and leave when I get up. I will buy more, but I will look, everything is clear, for me they are for "Christmas" for year-round use.
