Review on 🍷 Breville Electric Decanter BWD600SIL Sommelier - Brushed Stainless Steel by Jacki Reichmann

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Accelerates uncorking to pouring!

We have been loyal Breville fans for many years and enjoy their ingenuity in brewing tea. So we were interested to see how they could improve our wine. We tend to wait an hour or so for good vintage reds to breathe. Breville's Sommelier Hyper-Speed Decanter promises to erase that expectation, and yes, it delivers on that promise. We did a 4-way blind tasting with friends using Stag's 1998 Leap Cabernet Sauvignon. Glass 1 was poured as soon as the bottle was uncorked and allowed to breathe naturally for 1 hour while the bottle was resealed. Glass two was poured through a venturi aerator. Glass 3 was poured by Breville Sommelier after aerating for 1 minute and Glass 4 was a "fresh" pour from a re-corked bottle. The guests could not tell the difference between glass 1 and glass 3. Glass 4 had a noticeably higher tannin folding factor and glass 2 was somewhere in between, even more tannin than we would have liked. The only problem with this block is that the decanter is quite fragile and the replacement blocks are quite expensive (up to $200). Of course, we'll probably limit usage to the first wine of the night. So if your wine cellar is dominated by old reds that need time to breathe, Breville saves you an hour and makes for a fun drinking conversation.
