I bought these hoping to use them as a pre-filter on my Penguin Bio Wheel 350 and I was right. They work great! Update: They double the filter service interval on my 350. All you have to do in between is take a gallon sized ziplock bag and scoop the pre-filter with it while the filter is running and slide that pre-filter from the air intake into the bag to scoop some water from the reservoir while you draw the bag. from your aquarium is about 1/3 filled with water and also contains a pre-filter. Hold the bag with one hand, put the other hand inside the bag and brush/squeeze the pre-filter in the aquarium water inside the bag until the water turns brown. Squeeze the water out of the pre-filter and have it ready while you pour the brown water out of the bag. Throw the pre-filter in an empty bag. Scoop up another 1/3 full bag of aquarium water and repeat the cleaning process. Doing it twice should be fine. Change the pre-filter at the pump inlet while the filter is running. Perform this action when you find that the pre-cleaner starts to concave from the suction inlet due to a clogged pre-cleaner. Important tip: Never clean the filter with any solution other than aquarium water, otherwise you will destroy the colonies of beneficial bacteria.
