Do you know how many people have complained about the petrochemical smell in the reviews here? Not my set of pads. Both my wife and I have independently concluded that these pads were sprayed with a very common air freshener known to 'neutralize' odors at some point in the supply chain. Fixed odor issue. #facepalmAquarium keepers like me stay away. If unavoidable, use an unscented, glycerine-based soap to wash off both the original petrochemicals and the air freshener, and rinse until the odor is gone. It's tedious but the product is really clean and other than that it's a perfect sponge tampon. (And keep using glycerine soap if you have to get your hands in a tank, filter, or drain pan. Your other soaps likely add nitrates.)
