Needs constant maintenance

I bought these to replace an outdoor fountain pump. This is the second I've tried and both have failed. This hums and restricts flow if even a tiny particle or two of dirt gets on the adjustable knob. If there is even slightly less water (but still enough to cover the pump) this also creates noise. I have to deal with this several times a day. And then, when you first turn it back on, too much water comes out for the first few minutes, throwing it overboard, thus wasting water, before stabilizing in the proper flow. Nothing of the sort happened with the replaceable pump, which only needed periodic cleaning.
