I was skeptical of the "makes 6 gallons" claim when they started to grow. I still don't know if they reached the full 6 gallons, but it was more than enough for 10-7 inch vases. We started with cold water. To see if they get any bigger we switched to warm water and left them overnight, pouring them over the sides of the vase of course. Glad we put them in a rimmed container to catch the shoots. You can't see them - so if you're going to soak overnight, allow for some extra expansion and place a collecting container in a rimmed pot. I don't know what they're made of, but I wouldn't want a pet or child to eat them. Storage - Trying to dehydrate them for storage is unrealistic so we just kept them in empty water jugs for later use. They were crystal clear and great. We placed a vase in the light and the result was beautiful. FYI - they are "wet" so if you place the metal with them like you would a flower picker - the metal may rust and the rust stain will be visible in the vase.
