Only tight when the bottle is closed.
The functionality of the lock is good enough to prevent unauthorized use. As far as tightness goes, as stated in the product description, there is absolutely nothing about the product that offers a liquid seal. The product was not as advertised. I use on standard wine bottles. So if you decide to purchase, plan on either re-corking the bottle.
