We discovered Spiegelau about 6 years ago. Your crystal is the most durable. It's not hand-blown, of course, but the addition of platinum instead of lead makes the crystal very strong. Our wine glasses have fallen on tiles, sinks, etc. and have never been broken or cracked. We also wash them regularly in the dishwasher and there hasn't been any etching for many years. We've moved with them many times and have always held up well. This carafe is a Christmas present. It's absolutely stunning in its simplicity. I also looked at the Schott decanter, but decided on this one based on our experience with Spiegelau products and the classic character of this decanter. It's difficult to clean, like most decanters, but that's the only downside. It's durable, beautiful and will last a lifetime. There are many carafes from Reidel and others that cost a few hundred dollars and are trendy, this one is classic and would go great with the 2009 Borolo we are drinking for my daughter's 21st birthday.
